When Ford installs special bodies (or any other special equipment) on vehicles, the DSO changes from 2 digits to 6 digits.
Normally DSO refers to: the Ford District Sales (Zone) Offices, where the original selling dealers order their vehicles from.
2 digit DSO example: 71 = Los Angeles District Sales Office.
When the DSO is 6 digits, it becomes: Domestic Special Order.
6 digit DSO example: 712345
Domestic Special Order: The first 2 digits refer to the sales office(s), the last 4 digits (example: 2345) refer to the invoice number for the special equipment added.
The special equipment may or not be listed in parts catalogs. So what happens when the special equipment requires repairs?
The dealer contacts FoMoCo, and gives them the 6 digit DSO.
Ford either gives the dealers the Ford part numbers, or tells them who supplied the equipment and where to get the parts required.
