My check engine light has been coming on intermittently, mostly at freeway speeds on my 93' 5.8 so I pulled codes and got on KOEO test -171(HEGO sensor fault/not switching), -173(HEGO fault/rich),- 179(HEGO sensor fault unable to switch/rich at part throttle and 173 on KOER test so I replaced the oxygen sensor .and plugs with Autolite copper and set the timing to 10 degrees and disconnected the battery to reset the computer then drove it but the light came back on after about 7 miles or so. Pulled codes again on just the KOEO mode and still get the 173 code but none of the others . Anybody have any ideas? Not exactly clear on all these cdes but from what I have read on here I think I am on the right track.......Thanks Roy
HEGO sensor circuit indicates system rich (right side).
Also, I thought my 94 5.8 has one oxygen sensor. How soes it know it is the right side? Do it have two oxygen sensors?
Let me ask if you have a code reader. I was terrible at the paper clip method and got the thirty something dollar digital yellow and black one to get accurate codes.
If it is running rich on the highway could it be a dirty air filter starving it for air?
Sorry to have more questions than answers. I'm sure one of the gurus will be along soon to help you zero in on the issue.
b4hntn,
I do have the little yellow and black OBD1 code reader and when I changed the plugs they looked like they where running light brown and all looked the same which sounds about were they should be. I have a K&N filter with a fresh cleaning. I am just going by what the book that comes with the code checker says and does'nt mention what side it is. Does this info come from a factory manual? The Chiltons manual is not specific to what side either.......Roy
