I have had several problems crop up at once. My SD developed a miss, the power was down, the door locks and windows would not operate correctly. The only code being thrown was the back pressure sensor which has been a contant headache since I have owned the truck.
Then yesterday, I had a problem starting the old girl. The old girl would turn over, but no start. I had the vehicle towed to the shop. Several mechanics could not figure out. Then it dawned on me. A memory from reading a previous post on FTE. Not enough voltage. The batteries are almost eight years old. Hooked up a battery charger, charged for five minutes and the truck started.
Replaced the batteries with a new set of 1,085 amp Interstate Batteries. All problems just vanished. I did not think that the truck was such a power hungry monster. The miss is now gone, the windows and locks now operate, the engine starts now before it even turns over twice.
Over the last few months I noticed that it did not seem to be running right, but did not tie it to lack of voltage in the batteries. Today the old girl surprised me. As I left a business, I snatched 2nd gear and it spun the tires and wiggled her butt.
Now, my questions, Has anybody else had this problem with batteries that were about to fail and is the power increase just a figment of my imagination?
All BS aside, I would have the alternator tested just to sbe ure you don't run down the new batteries. Good post. Anything below 10.5 volts cranking and you're probably just gonna sit there. PCM needs 10.5.
Tenn01. You are correct about the 10.5 area. The test done on my truck was showing 10.8 at the no start. Plenty of RPM to start, just not enough voltage. Just hooking up the battery charger was enough to get it cranked up. After we knew what the problem was, then the battery and alternator test was done. The right battery completely failed and the left one was weak. As they were almost surely 8 years old (build date of truck 08/00), they were replaced. The alternator checked out ok.
