Something strange is going on...

A few weeks ago, I posted about some issues I was having with my heater core (and thanks to those that responded to my posts). Things have gotten really weird now...

I bought a new heater core from AA and took everything to the mechanic (no , not a ford dealer) for them to install (would've tried to do it myself but I just don't have the time). They called me back and said after running a pressure check on the system a couple of times, they found no leaks anywhere - including the heater core. But after the mechanic drove the truck, he said that he did smell something "like antifreeze but it was really faint", but wasn't sure since all the tests came back negative.

What in the world could be the problem? I want to get whatever this is corrected but if I don't have to pay for an unnecessary fix, I'd rather not. But something is certainly fogging up my windhsiled when I turn on the heat or defroster ...

When they pressure test the system, they are probably looking for coolant draining out of the evap drain. Perhaps the leak is small enough not to cause an observable flow? How do they explain the foggy windshield?

That's what I was thinking...but aren't those test designed to detect even the SMALLEST leaks? I really don't know much about that but I would've figured it would.

And could it even remotely be something else? To my limited knowledge and from everything I've read, everything points to the heater core. Could something else remotely cause the same thing?

Have you checked the heater box drain to make sure it is not stopped up?
Water could build up in there and cause a smell and a foggy windshield.

I guess the question is what type of leakdown test he did. If he checked the presure leakdown from the coolant resivor, then there would have to be a pretty good leak to show up.

On the other hand, if he disconnected the heater hoses and pressurized only the core, then even a small leak will show up quick.

My bet is that he checked the complete system, and the pressure drop was not noticable.

Change the heater core anyway. I would bet it is the problem.

Thanks guys. Yeah - I'm going to have it replaced; everything points to it anyway and I'm tired of driving my other car. I miss my truck!
