I have 79 F 250 4 speed, 460 that I recently rebuilt and just put in the other day. The truck rolls in neutral, and will roll when you push the clutch in. The engine will not roll over. I have tried rolling it over at the crank but it still won't roll over. I have tried pulling the truck and dumping the clutch but the thing wouldn't turn over. The motor is two months old. Any suggestions on a problem or maybe a solution? If the flywheel bolts where 1/8 longer would that cause a problem? I am open to any suggestions.
Thanks
Sounds like you used the wrong pilot bushing. Try and loosen the trans from the bellhousing by about 5/16 of an inch and see if it turns by the starter. This could be the case if its a 4x4 and you just put 460 in if its a 4x2 and it had a 460 I dont know. Keep us posted. If its the 4x4 issue there are ways to fix this.
I had the combination working about a month ago, but the teeth on the ring gear came off so I had to replace the ring gear. I finally got to replacing the ring and finally got everything back together but now will not work. So I don't think it could be the pilot bearing. It really started hard before i tore it apart if that means anything.
What combo are you using I have had a 460 and now a 429 in my 79 250 4x4. I had probs starting the 429 but it was my fault for using a standard 429 bushing. Doubt its the bolts either. Did you replace ring gear or the whole flywheel.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 15-Nov-02 AT 03:20 AM (EST)]Yes thats what I use to but supposedly the webbing inside the bell hits a 460 flywheel if you dont grind itdown some. Someone I know had to grind theres with an l and l flywheel to. Just tryin ti get you some ideas. I would think at this point it couldnt hurt to loosen the bell housing and see if it turns.
