After reading a TSB regarding irratic readings for the tach and speedo, it's time to take the truck into the dealer for a replacement instrument cluster.
I found on a couple of occasions that the tach would be at "half" of what it should be reading. This happened a couple times.
Lately, while sitting in the driveway my speedometer would read nearly 30 mph! Over a period of several hours, the speedo would s-l-o-w-l-y drop down to 0.
I tried cycling the key which would lower it by a MPH or so each time but knowing there was definatly an issue, it's time to finally get a dealer to tell me what is going on. I hope there are no dealer/Ford issues as I have over 15K on the odo. and aftermarket goodies.
I had my instrument cluster replaced about a month ago in my 06 . It should be covered under the 3/36. My fuel gauge would go to zero when I filled the tank. Yup, the low fuel light would go on and then the truck would go into it's Low Fuel strategy and defuel itself. Like you, I could recycle the key and the guage would come up to about a quarter (low fuel light would go off and low fuel strategy would stop defueling). Ask on this board about dealers in your area. Mine is very good. thanks rc
I had issues with mine and fuel gauge too. The dealer replaced the dash cluster to fix my issue.
Just a note of warning...when you take it in to have the cluster replaced...note your total milage. They screwed mine up (it would have been great for me but I got the extended warranty) by plugging in the milage from the day I bought the truck (used). I didn't notice till I was half way home (it's a 90 minute drive to my dealership). They appologized and set another appt to reinstall another cluster. Verify your milage before you drive off the lot.
What year model is yours? Is it still under warranty? I had mine replaced under warranty so I'm not aware of the TSB that was mentioned in the first post.
In my case, it wasn't the speedo, it was the fuel gauge that was giving me problems.
My truck an "06 was doing the same thing on and off for a month. The tach reading was way off as was the speedo. I thought the dash was bad, then 30 days later my truck wouldnt start.
Turns out the pass side battery was heading south, then causing it to affect the electronics. Replaced the battery 2 weeks ago and havent had a problem since.
Sorry I didn't mention that I have a 2006 F-250 Powerstroke. The speedometer has acted erratically a couple of times, once it wouldn't go over 20 mph and one it wouldn't drop below 15 mph. My water in fuel light also came on. I emptied the water seperator of about 3 table spoons of water, but the light didn't go out.
