Don't let 'em try to give you a 6.0, either. I agree with SolidGround on this one. I think that they may be trying to swindle you out of your truck for next to nothing so that they can put an engine in it and sell it for a boatload of money.
When my engine lets go (it's an 01 with PMR's too), I will foot the bill to put in a forged rod engine. Mine's got 106K on it now....just waiting for the bang!! With these trucks, how does one really "trade up"? The only way to go is DOOOOWWWNNNNN; and it's a LONG fall!!

don't let them total your truck. They will probably put a new engine in it and you'll see it on the lot in two months. Demand that you want a new engine(with forged rods like jeremy said.) There is not excuse for that mistake. . . and especially for trying to just give you a free oil change and call it even. . . I mean DUH!!! Of course they owe you more oil. . . . but thats just disingenuous. I know thats not a surprise coming from a dealership. . . but c'mon. Well hopefully it all works out for ya.

thanks guys for all the input. i talked to them this morning and they are just playing the waiting game for the insurance guy to come out and look at it. i got them to give me a car for the mean time so at least im not out of ride for the meantime.
JTharvey - is there any way to tell what Block i have, like if it has forged or PMR?

ok well i have been in Mechanics for some time now however im new to diesel. Yes the engine will shut down if engine oil runs out. however in the time that it takes for all 15qt of oil to run out of the truck it can build proper oil pressure to send through the Rods up to the oil rings of the pistons and worse it take alot of pressure to send the oil through the tiny feed hole that gets the oil to more importantly the Rod bearings. Rod bearings need the oil more than anything and if it doesn't get that they will wear very fast and then in turn start breaking down. yes the engine did turn off after pretty much all the oil ran out but you have to look at the fact that there were alot of moving parts that probably were not getting the oil needs to prevent wear and it was just a matter of time before so parts showed the wear and then in turn this happens.
Like i said im not positive since im not a diesel tech but hopefully someone will chim in on this

alkim has got you covered on how to check your current rods to be sure. Look in that inspection hole in the link he gave and look for either bolts or studs. Studs and you've got forged rods, bolts and they're PMR's.
The theory on these engines shutting off before any lower end damage comes from the fact that the injection system, which runs off oil, is at the top of the motor and should the the first thing to starve for oil if you run low, which in theory would make the injectors quit firing due to lack of oil pressure and the engine would stop. However, I also know that the HPOP res is the first thing to receive oil from the pan, and the HPOP's themselves will run with as little as 5 psi in the res, so if you're down a lot of oil the HPOP may still be running injectors while the rest of the engine is starving -- that's only my thoughts though, no proven info. However, I do know of at least a couple trucks, can't remember who right now, but a couple of them that had lower end damage done due to lack of oil pressure and the truck was still running, injectors still firing ok.
