Temp gauge unresponsive?

Temp gauge unresponsive?
The one wire connection is in place on the sensor but there is no reponse on the gauge. People often say to replace the sensor and maybe I will if I can get a visual on it (2.3) but I've never seen one of these sensors die in over 30 years of driving all kinds of Fords. Has anyone ever had the gauge go bad? Can you test the gauge? I have an instrument panel from a '95 F150 and the gauges look the same. Any problem switching temp gauges if I find out my gauge is not funtioning?
