The last 5 miles of my trip from Kansas to South Florida will not soon be forgotten. I am in the need of a New Transmission for my 1999 F350 with the 7.3. Don't know why after pulling fine for nearly 2000 miles it decided to go all at once. I had been seeing the trans temp increasing a little when I got to the warmer weather but it seemed to stay around 130 to 150. I started doing quite a bit of stop and go driving so I turned off the OD button, suddenly I have a trans temp up near 180. I am pulling a 40 ft toyhauler so just pulling off the street isn't as easy pulling to the side of the road. I managed to get off the road once. Probably should have stayed there but after putting a quart of fluid and letting everythingcool off I thought I could make it. Didn't. Thanks to Pete (Driving a 02 F350) he pulled me off the road and gave me the name of a transmission tech in Miami. I'm in Ft. Lauderdale right now and getting the truck there will be a problem. If there is anyone who can offer some names of transmission places to call or places not to call I will be very thankful.
sorry about your problem on your trip, im in NY so i cannot help you , im going to keep you up top for others to see,

I know Ft walton is a long way from Ft lauderdale, but here is a link to the contact page for Suncoast Transmissions. I believe they have dealers in different parts of FL. Form what I understand thay are good trannys, almost equal to BTS or John Wood.
I've never been to Florida, but I'm pretty good on the net. Here is what I found:
Not sure if they are any good, but there is a business called Bear Transmissions in Ft. Lauderdale at 1100 W. Oakland Park Blvd. Here is their site: http://www.beartransmission.net/center%20locations.htm. Phone number 866-435-BEAR
They claim they can overhaul diesel transmissions and claim one of their main tranny guys was a Ford tech who used to rebuild Ford trannys.
I'll keep looking, let you know if I find anything else.
I will visit them today. In your search did you come up with Ivan at Tranny Tech in Miami. The guy that pulled me off the road. (Friendly Ford driver.) Gave me his name and when I mentioned it to the guy at Suncoast (thanks Bdrummer & Haulingboat). He said he is the one he would use in South Florida. Spoke with him yesterday and at least got the truck to the RV park where I will be spending the next month or so. So far Ivan sounds like the guy but I will do my comparesome shopping as I always do.

I didn't, but that doesn't mean much. I came across a few in Miami but I was focusing on something closer to you in the Ft. Lauderdale vicinity....but I was also finding that a lot of these shops will offer free towing if you decide to go with them.
I'd go with the word of the fellow Ford man...also if a diesel tranny guy recommended them it sounds like an easy choice. I wasn't sure how quickly you were needing to get back on the road, as I know from experience...being stuck somewhere is never cool and it's always good to have options.
I put 2 gallon of ATF in the truck yesterday and it now will move under it's own power. A neighbor in the RV park said he used to work on Fords and said they would always "puke out the fluid if you over worked them. Just fill it back up and drive it." I took it out for a few errands and all seemed well. Shifted like it always had but the tranny temp in western Kansas never moved driving empty, even in the summer but it did increase last evening and it was a cool damp evening in Florida. Will be taking it to Ivan next week and at least will be putting a larger oil cooler on it. Next vehicle I get to tow with will be a manual transmisssion though.
I do have to brag on my truck a little though. For the first 1400 miles of the trip I was very happy with everything. Run it up to 2000 RPM set the cruise, then just sit back and let it roll. Would have to get off the cruise on some of the steeper hills or the EGT would get too high, but it never quit pulling, or felt like it had any strain. The one section of the mountains in Tennessee I did have to "drive" up but otherwise no problems till I got into Southern Florida. Was fairly happy with my 9.68 MPG. Hope I get the same heading back 'up hill' to the North in the spring.
