So I've assembled all the parts i need to install (read: hopefully) my door speakers here in a little bit. I'm going to removing my map holder thingy's on my door, cutting a hole, then placing the speaker in there. the speakers i'm using are pheonix gold octain R zrated component 6.5's i bought off of ebay. I will take lots of pix and explain how i'm doing it for futer reference to others!!
commencing: as soon as i get back from taking my girlfriend some water (bout thirty mins. lol)
i have a set of 5.25's (phoenix Gold RSd 2ways) but because they're floating they don't make much bass (read: no bass at all till cranked all the way) and i want just some more midrange bass up front. the rear half of my car sound great!!
tonight i have to modify the speakers so that the grills i got so that they fit on. I'd probly have it done today, but when it's that time of the month... i'm not one to argue!! lol plus i had to take a nap, i got no sleep last night and school started today. i'll post pix in a little bit of what the grills fitting.
p.s. Is beowulf supposed to be scary? i think it's hilarious, and the soundtrack is pretty nice (if there's more than one version, its the one with the guy that play conner mccloud in highlander)
OK so far today I cleaned up the speakers, purchased speed nuts and matching screws purchased, found a random coat hanger at school that i will use to pass the speaker wire through the door to the interior, got a crap load of speaker wire, new door pannel tabs, and modified the speaker grills. i'd take pictures, but the only camera i have is my phone, and the pictures turn out like crap at night.
stage two tomorow:
remove door pannels, figureout where the speakers are going, remove door pannel map pockets, cut hole's for speakers, run wires, mount cross overs, reattach the door pannels, hook everything up and hope it all works. lol j/k i know it will!!!
OK my interent loves me enough to finaly let me log on here and post this stuff up. firstly i'd like to say that this job takes LITERALY FOR EVER. It took me the better half of a day just to get ONE door speaker cut out and hooked up. but it sounds pretty good. so i think it's worth it. any whoo, here's the pix.
Door pannel off; not much room for a speaker w/o cutting the sheet metal.
Visual testing where i decided to place them.
Test fitting fitment of the speaker in the door lock/power window button hole, there was about 1" of space between the magnet and the door. just enough!!
The hole drawn out (with blue highlighter, no less!)
Almost cut...
Finished!!! the first hole is cut, before it's smoothed out. it stank...
Placement testing on my work bench...
Grill's on... note: that's not the grill that is supposed to come with those speakers.
I fought with this stupid rubber thing for over two hours trying to get wire ran through it... turns out that the end that's in the main cabin is taped off nice and tight, while the end in the door isn't... thanks ford!
wire ran...
finished product installed!
Forsale both pair's $150 each, i'll trade one pair for a polk audio 12, just the sub, no box or amp. no i did not run four subs in my car, i bought my friends setup (who also had the same subs as me) cuz i wanted the amp but he wouldn't part them out.
Over all it beats really nice and actualy sounds pretty good. i know it will sound better with the passenger side one installed as well. i don't think i'm going to keep those grills on, they dig into my side and hurt a lil bit. also, it's hard to hear them at low volumes, because they're rated at 70w nom, and at max cranked all the way my deck put's out fifty... so i'm going to be investing in a GOOD 4ch 200-300w amp. any sugjestions?
my current sub amp is an audiobahn T4002A two channel amp. i like it, just puts out WAY too much bass
put some plastic sheeting over the inside of the speakers to protect them from moisture or the voice coils and cone turn to crud in one winter
Aero windows in the doors leak down and rust everything
cut a 3" hole above the speakers and screen for ventilation drying, helps
looking good
turn down the volume when you pull up along side that green 96 AWD Aero with the old duffer behind the wheel. he can't stand Pearl Jam at 180 decibels.
hahaha ok. i usualy turn the tunes down at redlights. i'm trying to get away from the loud booming that can be heard from miles away... lol. yes i'm seventeen and saying that... lol
well i'd LIKE to place them where my map pockets are, but can i safely and legaly cut up part of the sheet metal on the door so there's room for the speakers w/o sacrificing strength?
and what do you mean bass can turn my kidney's to mush? i don't blast tunes that much, just loud enough that it sounds good, around 20 out of 40 on my deck... sometimes less.
i've heard of ear damage from too loud speakers but kidney damage is a new one on me. can too much bass really turn kidneys to mush?
Not to hijack the thread, but I'm not so sure about renal damage. If the noise pressure level is that high, I think you'll encounter other signs/symptoms first.
High pressure subsonic noise can cause retinal detachment and gastrointestinal disturbance. The bowel upset and resulting discomfort will probably force you to seek a safer noise level before any kidney damage might occur. The sound pressure levels to cause these problems probably require far too much power to be generated by a car stereo system.
The military has been working on subsonic generators for crowd control and nonlethal personnel harrassment for a while now, but the power requirements are enormous, and it's not a very directional sound wave.
They've been more successful with high frequency, high decibel stuff. It's hard to fire weapons when you're too busy trying to protect your ears from painful sound.
Thanks. I'm going to hit up the bone yard and find a new drivers door pannel and possibly move the speaker closer to the floor so i can hear it better, i'm goin to try a diff. spot on the pass. side, eventualy.
next speaker mod:
custom built/fit boxes for my 6x9's. they sound best in sealed boxes
and dynomat/sealing the doors for better speaker sound.
also a better way to seal off the hatch speakers, so they are better sounding/looking (and so i don't have to use bass. reducing capacitor thingy's)
Nice work, I was thinking about upgrading the Aeros tunes but was thinking more along the lines of putting in some old plate components in the dash if I could get them to fit..
