Just having picked up a new 08 ranger, I want to keep this engine in prestine condition. All engines have a tendency to get gunked up. I thought sticking to oil changes every 3000 miles would be a good start, and then every 9k miles, running some oil detergent through the engine and then draining it. The user's manual says not to use any type of detergents? I wonder if this is to the detriment or the benefit of the engine. Any enlightened input would be appreciated! Should I use the engine cleaner every 9k miles or not?
Use top quality oil keep it changed somewhere between 3000-5000 miles (use the lower number if mostly urban driving) use good oil filters and Change the Air cleaner regularly and you won't have problems. My 2003 is coming 100,000 miles and the oil is just starting to darken when when I change at 4000 miles.
I would not. If you change your oil every 3000 miles that should be plenty good enough. Your engine will say thank you every time you spin that new oil filter on.
No need to change that often unless you make short runs and don't get the engine up to a good operating temp. Run the suggested 5W20 weight in the 2.3L and after the first 10K miles I would switch to a good synthetic like Mobil1, Amzoil, or Royal Purple. Run a good filter and change the oil every 5K and everything will be fine. I have the 2.3L in my 2005 Focus and run Mobil1 SuperSyn and change it every 10K miles and no problems so far. Oil comes out pretty clean and the car has 73K on it.
IMO, with a crankcase lube that says on the container, that it meets or exceeds Fords 930 specs & doing 3K OCI's, your not likely to need any kind of engine oil additive/detergent/flush, as a fully formulated crankcase lube has all the detergent our engines need.
If your still of a mind to add something anyway, maybe consider something like "AutoRx", which is a ester based cleaner upper, that won't mess with the oils chemistry too much.
But if it were mine, I'd just skip the detergent & use the money on good filters like a Motorcraft & a good oil.
BTW Zach, if your Exploders engine is messed up with deposits & your determined to use something, you might consider the AutoRx too.
