Not Enough Heat!

Hi Folks,

Newbie here with a brand-new-to-me 88 Fullsize Bronco. Problem is that the heater doesn't seem to be working very well. Plenty of air coming out but it only gets "so" warm--not nearly as hot as normal for defrosting, etc. What's the deal? Heater core? Thermostat? Can these be handled by a novice mechanic? Thanks in advance!

What setting do you run it? Windshield, mix, floor, or went? "Windshield" and "mix" are not as hot as "floor" or "went".

Thanks for the reply. In short, it doesn't seem to matter. Temperature is "luke warm" at best, no matter what combo or setting. I've been reading in the meantime and it sounds like I need to check the hoses leading to the heater core to see if it's possibly the heater core or something before that. Sound correct to you?

i would replace the tstat with a 195* and see if that helps. if not then you probably have a bad heater core which is really easy to replace.

Feel the heater hoses going into the heater core at the fire wall.

If one is hot and the other one is not hot but just warm it is a plugged heater core, you may correct this problem by switching the hoses from one side of the heater core to the other.

Also very important before you do any repairs check some of the easier things like coolant level not just at the overfill bottle but at the rad and also check and make sure the fan belt is tensioned correctly because a loose or worn fan belt will cause the engine to run hot but because the water pump is not moving enough coolant you could have poor heat due to weak circulation.

I have an '88 that was having the same problems. I hooked a garden hose up to both sides of the heater core (in and out) and flushed it both ways. You could have planted corn in all the dirt that came out of it. Now the heater will run you out of the truck.
