If you are going to leave on Monday and want to get back early Thursday, 2800 miles is a trek, especially this time of year. You don't know what kind of weather and road conditions you are going to encounter, so try to be prepared for the unexpected. Good luck.
Well said!
In May 1995, I helped my B-I-L drive back to SW Wyoming, from Baltimore.
24' Ryder truck with a Town Car on a trailer, behind the truck.
We did the trip in 3 days. It was basically, well. . . hectic!
Baltimore to Elkhart, IN the first day.
Elkhart to Lincoln, NE the second. (My B-I-L took the wrong route, and we wound up in Madison, WI! He wouldn't listen. Rte 90 goes north. Rte 80 goes where we wanted to go. Oh well. . .only 1 day shot in the. . .ahem.)
Lincoln, NE to Evanston, WY the last day.
We stopped only for fuel, and sleep at night. We got breakfast in the morning, and ate from vending machines at the fuel stops.
captain p4,
Yellowstone will take at least two days to see (and enjoy). Been there. Done that.
Custer Battlefield Park in Montana, is fantastic!
Devil's Tower, Wyoming, is awesome.
Mount Rushmore, South Dakota, is the most incredible place to visit.
With only 4 days to travel cross-country, you won't have much time to see anything, and actually 'see' it.
Have a safe trip!

You don't have time to see much but the ocean - you could drive out thru Astoria and cross the bridge into Washington and go to Marsh's Museum in Long Beach, since you want to see the ocean. The place features "Jake the Alligator Man", a very poor attempt at sewing what appears to be a shrunken head to the body of 'gator. The place is so cheesy it's worth a stop. Plus, the Restaurant has good Fish and Chips.
The US Gov't changed the name to reflect all that fought there.
It's now known as Little Big Horn Battlefield. It's an eerie place to visit.
I couldn't remember the (actual) name, but, I knew that everyone would know the name 'Custer'. (I'll have to get two more cups of coffee in me before the memory gets jump started!)
And yes. . . it definitely is eerie there. (But beautiful!!)

It was still Custer Battlefield in 1990, my first trip there, but when I went back on June 25th 2006, the name had been changed. The battle took place June 25, 1876.
If it wasn't for spavened mules, Custer would have had Gatling Guns!
Prolly would have lost anyway...there were an estimated 1400 braves that opposed Custer. Tribes represented: Lakota, Sans Arc, Brule, Minneconjou Sioux; Northern Cheyenne, and a few Arapaho.
btw: Antietam and Gettysburg evoked the same eerie feeling, as did Andersonville.

With the time of year to consider, and the possibilty of road closures due to weather, if I were you guys, I'd skip the sight-seeing tours and just head home!! You aren't gonna be able to travel along at 70mph on many of the roads,,, What happens if you don't make it by Thursday?? That is a very strong possibility,,, You may need to have a plan "B" lying around!!
She misses her mom's birthday party, the reason she was originally coming. Her flight back is Sunday. More I think about it and with what you guys are saying maybe we should leave Sunday night instead of Monday morning and not sight see.
Guess the sight seeing will have to wait for my "wheelin across America trip" me and my buddy are planning. Whenever we get our broncos in good enough shape and a trailer big enough for the both of them..
Better make it Sunday morning. It's better traveling during the day - if you start out at night, you may end up doing the whole trip at night and not get to see anything.
Started packing a little and have two questions.. anyone know if I can take a radar detector carry on?
what about an electric razor?
I really don't want to deal with picking up my luggage and all if I don't have to. Everything I need fits in a carry on, just don't know if those two things can go on.
Bunch of pictures to sort through before I post some up, but I had a great time. I'm beat and probably going to get some rest now.. thanks for all the suggestions. We ended up leaving sunday night and drove through until monday night. I'll post up some more a little later...
