I just bought a 78 f150 351M C6 long bed for a project. The 351m has a rod hangin out of the pan so I will be replacing it in the near future. What I need help figuring out is what did this truck have for emissions from the factory, so I can get it right for inspection. Here in PA it's only a visual for this truck, so I'm just trying to make it look good to pass. I've read some old posts in this forum and am a little confused as to what it should have (smog pump, cats, egr, pcv). I've found the Super Duty forum very helpful and am looking forward to learning from this forum as I go through this project. Any help would be greatly appreciated. If it helps here is a pic of the door jamb sticker ,valve covers were changed so I can't get that one.
There should hopefully be a sticker on a valve cover or somewhere in the engine compartment that shows what it started with. EDIT: Just re-read it. no sticker with details.
Baseline lookup would suggest smog pump, vapor canister, Probably not a Cat. Converter, PCV system, EGR, and perhaps the hot air riser setup. Could be wrong on that last one--
If you look at the current pully system for the belts, and you see one that clearly had a belt on it--but now does not? Chances are higher that it had/has either A/C that is no longer installed, or the Smog Pump.
PCV system is easy--Vapor Canister's not a big pain.. The smog pump is what can hurt. I'm not seeing much on the Cat-Converter in the parts company I normally use until we hit 1980 for a year.
It's mainly looking for unused hoses/pullys/valve units/etc... That would point towards something being removed that shouldn't have been.
I'd suggest the advice of the pros here, along with hitting some of the parts houses websites. Enter in the year/make/model..and you should be able to see the emission parts used on some of the model year you are working with. (it varies depending opon option packages they selected to install as well, some trucks may have parts x,y,z..others just x,z)
I just looked at the filler neck there is no flapper and it does not say unleaded fuel only on the gauge. There are no unused pulleys on the motor. I geuss it would be safe to assume no smog pump or cats were ever on this, just egr and pcv.
