Do regular trans fluid changes and keep it from over heating and it'll last a while.

What mileage interval is considered regular and for those without a trans temp guage how do we know when it is getting hot? What are some warning signs of a trans on its last leg. Mines seems a little loose but maybe I am used to the newer trans in my 06 Exp. I drove a few used 2500 Burbs and their trans seemed loose also, is that typical of 3/4 or HD vehicles. I see there are electronic shift controllers for this trans, are they better than the trans body shift improvers? What is a popular mod for the trans to get tighter shifts and hold OD better?

The 4R100s don't shift particularly firm. That's normal.

On its last legs: Whine, burnt or varnished fluid, clutch material or metal in the pan, the front seal leaking. A 4R100 will set a code for slipping or overheating. If the O/D Off button is flashing, it set a transmission code.

Regular fluid changes should be done anually or every 25,000 miles. You decide. I change mine anually, which works out to about 20,000+.

A temp gauge is a good idea on any truck that tows or hauls. Additional cooling is always a good idea. A larger or secondary cooler is a great addition.

Before a long trip: a month or so would be ideal, have the trans serviced, add the gauge and cooler if you want. When its serviced inspect the pan for debris. The extra time is to check for leaks. Its never a good idea to do that kind of stuff the day before you leave. If you find a problem or have a leak, there is no time to recover.

111,600 miles on my 01 F250 4x4 diesel. Torque Converter broke. I changed the fluids every 20-30k miles with the filter at 100k.

I had the torque converter changed at 80,000 miles, it made a hell of a racket. I think there was a TSB on it.

The 4R100 should have a temp sensor built in. I know the one in our Expedition does. I was able to monitor transmission temps with a diabosport predator.
