Two batteries

I replaced my batteries today and was curious: why does the diesel have two batteries?

Glow plugs pull some serious draw while the starter sucks down some as well. Plenty of power is needed for cranking.

Extra Amps are needed for glow plugs and High Compression of the Diesel.
