Exhuast/intake upgrades

Reading in the current issue of "Diesel Power" there is an artical about installing a Diamond Eye exhaust and Volant intake on a '04 PSD CC FX4. The artical claims they improved the fuel milage 1.2 MPG on the highway over stock; and 0.9 while towing. I'll be the first to admit I'm confused...one group of folks on here says don't waits your time with a new intake...while a few say it breaths better after swaping to an aftermarket. I'm looking for some experinced opinions here...which means you've installed it and have the numbers to back up the increased/unchanged fuel milage. I'm not trying to get my '04 into the same milage range as a Jetta, ain't going to happen. But on the same token fuel ain't getting any cheaper and minor upgrades here an there do help make one's truck stand out in the crowd.

The COST alone for the intake systems don't make the gains worth anything. The OEM intake is GREAT for power to 500 HP, so why threaten your turbo warranty with the potential of dusting?

The exhaust will not help too much since the primary use is to drop EGTs. There is a feeling of power loss since the power band moves higher up the RPM band.

I run the ZOODAD mod, with my own modded OEM intake, an Accufab Power elbow while using a 3.5" straight piped exhaust. I have NO complaints with my setup and would recommend this approach unless you are going BIG on everything in the future.

I'm going to do the zoodad when the weather gets better. I'm keeping my OEM intake but what did you do to mod your own intake HeavyAssault if you don't mind?

I cut the long snorkle portion off the front of the OEM intake. Increasing the open area QUITE a bit to the filter; instead of a soda straw it's a fire hose now.

I've looked at the intake several times between the filter box and grill and wondered if that opening in behind the grill could be opened up to increase the "ram air" effect as the truck is rolling down the highway. I figured the effects wouldn't be noticed below 40-50 mph...but since I spend most of my time in the 60-75 range every bit helps when your trying to be more efficent and take advantage of the pressure against the front of the truck.

Just by doing these three simple things, what kind of changes can you expect? Boost,Egt, seat of pants or just peace of mind? I ask because I don't have a boost gauge and am looking a buying the elbow next week for an easy upgrade and spot for the boost gauge plus it's pretty inexpensive.

EGTs should be lower, the Accufab may give you a seat of pants difference.

Do each mod one at a time and LISTEN to the motor. Listen to the turbo these things will tell you what is going on,

Hey, thanks for the picture. I get it now. I may try that when I get around to the Zoodad. Appreciate it.

One at a time sounds good, but first has to be gauges. I really want a baseline. I still have the EGR and throttle plate hooked up although I believe it was taken out of the program over a year ago.

Did you open up either one of the opens in the front of the airbox? I looked in the tech folder and didn't see any mention of the ZOODAD, am I missing something?

The zoodad mod is where you cut an opening next to the radiator that will let air flow more directly into the snorkel for the airbox, you don't cut the airbox.

Do a search for "Zoodad mod" and you will find alot of posts about it.

My EGR is still intact, but I removed the throttle plate to minimize the EGR flow.

So from reading one of the ZOODAD threads...the hole that is to the right (driver's side) of the main radiator opening...is enlarged? My '04 has a 2"-2.5" round hole there now. I'm just trying to understand what exactly is such a big deal about the ZOODAD mod. I run a "pavement princess" as it is...so I don't forsee a plunge into a mud hole for as long as I own the truck (I have other toys that are for the mud). Though driving during a monsoon, it would make me wonder if the air filter will remain dry.
