Hi,
My out of town daughter arrived to visit and is having transmission trouble--her automatic transmission won't upshift from 2nd gear to drive gear, so her top speed is about 85 km at about 3,000 rpm. Her car is a 1997 Ford Escort, 2.0 litre engine.
She needs to drive home (about 350 kms.) in two days. Any suggestions or advice on what may be causing this problem? Can it be repaired by any corner garage or transmission shop, or should she take it to a local dealer, even though they are generally more expensive?
Thanks for any advice or suggestions!
Frank.
I cant tell you exactly what the problem is but it doesnt sound good.
Any Tranny shop could surly fix it. But it might need a rebuild!
Do you know of a reputable place near you?
Thanks for your reply. I'm wondering if it might be something that determines when to shift, as otherwise, the transmission seems to work fine. I'm hoping its not a total rebuild.
Frank.
Last time my truck tranny went out,,it would not go into 3rd or OD.
When it was in drive it would go first/second then it felt like it would go in natural.
I had to put the shift lever in second to get home.
Is it doing anything like that?
It will shift normally from first into second, but then stays in second and won't shift into normal drive (3rd?) gear, so max. speed is about 80 km/hr with tach at 3,000--adding more throttle raises rpms, but it won't shift into normal drive gear for highway driving. I'm wondering if there is a sensor or electric part that determines when it should shift that may be faulty. The problem just arose, prior to that it was driving fine.
Frank.
Thanks, Phil. I just found out that they can do a computer scan on this transmission, so hopefully that will determine whether it's a sensor or similar part, or something more serious. We'll keep our fingers crossed and take it in to the transmission shop tomorrow.
Frank.
Thanks for your clarification. There are no dash lights on and aside from the tranny shifting problem, it runs fine (engine, brakes, etc. all feel and sound normal). I am planning to take it to a transmission shop tomorrow to have a computer scan of the transmission, and then we'll know better what the problem might be. As it's my daughter's car, and she is on a tight student budget (and we can only help so much), I hope it's nothing serious. In the meantime, it's a worry til we get it figured out.
Thanks again!
Frank.
