dragging rear brake
the truck stops straight and pretty quick.. just has that low soft pedal..
I never did get rid of it on my 86 bronco.. new brakes all around, new master cyl, new booster, adjusted the drums many times.. it never went away.. but I never thought of the rubber lines..will have to try that
95F350XL:I think my vacuum booster for the brakes is going out too.... can hear a sucking sound when I have them on for a while..
As for the spongy pedal, some good suggestions have already been brought up.
I would double check the brake adjustment (if low, it would usually just couse low pedal, but sometimes causes "spongy" feel). Find an empty parking lot and back the truck up at around 5mph then hit the brake, this is the best and easiest way to get the final adjustment. repeat a couple of times to see if pedal starts feeling better.
If adjusting the brakes did not work have someone pump the pedal (with engine running to get booster) while you check all four brake hoses for ANY swelling. I would recomend doing this even if you get the "spongy" feeling fixed, just to be safe. I would also check all the steel brake lines, you can get a spongy feeling from rusty lines that are ready to BURST. this is rare, and is usually acompanied by a slow loss of fluid.
I finally got the brakes "just right" I readjusted them, bled all four wheels again..plus the RABS cylinder/module..did'nt do that one before...checked every hose and line I could see..they look ok.. got a good high pedal and she stops on a dime now.. but when I tightened up the bleeder screw for the right front wheel, the stupid thing broke off.. it's closed though..will take care of it later.. the way the truck stops now makes me wonder if the rear brakes were even working before..
once again, thank you.
Do yourself a favor & go ahead now & rep the bleeder now. It & and an easy out are cheap compared to the hassel it will be if you wait till later. It has moved recently, but after a few hundred heat cycles combined with winter weather & it could be a bear next time you need to bleed.
