Are the 04 6.0L diesels something to stay away from. I am buying a new truck and just wondering if I should just stay with the 7.3 or go with the 6.0. I did a search and found a lot of people posting problems on the 6.0's but thought I would ask what you'll thought.
Touch and go. Some motors get a couple hundred thousand on them with proper care and very small problems. Others get bought back. Somebody else chime in any time....
a lot of people have had problems with their 03/04's and will tell you to stay away. I personally used to own a 2004 psd and it was an amazing truck with no problems. Strong as could be...def take it for a ride and run an oasis b4 you buy.
2004 F350 4x4, here. 62000, ten thousand of which have been from yours truly. I'm lifted and spinning 37's (read: not easy on the drivetrain) with a heavy foot. I drive it like it's stolen but take care of it pretty well - I have had no issues to speak of. As well, my Oasis is mostly clean and doesn't display anything note-worthy. Care for it properly, including fluid changes, warm-up/cool-down times, etc., and you'll do well. (Assuming it hasn't been abused and has a clean history).
I agree with Patrick - take care of it and it'll go a million miles. My 04 has 81000 on it, and the only problem has been a replacement oil pressure sensor, which was covered by the warranty. I've been really impressed with it and love it. I imagine most of the problems which have been posted in regards to the 6.0 developed in fewer miles.
yeah I have a 7.3 now but found a good deal on a 6.0 with 76 thousand miles on it and didn't know if it was worth it or not. Who knows I may just play it safe and keep the 7.3 but man I love all the little features of the 04 interior
Get an 05' or newer (depending on how much you want to pay). There's been significantly fewer problems. Then again, the 7.3s are a great motor in their own right. If it's not broke, don't fix it.
I've got a late '04 with 57k miles. No problems other than a harness recall that I need to get take care of. I'm not gentle on it running 5.5" lift and 37" Toyo M/Ts.
I have a 04 and i have replaced under warranty 2 egr's, turbo, and it is in right now for intake gaskets, I also suspect a leaky up pipe. At my own cost hubs, oil changes, regular maintenance ect. My dad has a 05 excursion lots of front end problems, and it is going in for head gaskets as soon as mine gets out. as stated above it is touch and go drive it and look how long it sat because that will kill the turbo if it has sat for an extended duration.
yeah I am just going to try and find another 7.3 or wait and save some cash to get an 06-07 model. I can't just buy a trailer, I pull a goseneck and need the longer bed as I can't pull it with my truck now cuz it knocks out the back window.
I went to the dealer today and he had to move a 6.0 out of the way (an 05) and he let it cycle and tried to crank and nothing then did it again and it finally started but made the most horrible sound I have ever heard. Sounded like someone striking a hammer on a metal table. The 7.3 I looked at started right up and it's 11 degrees out today.
