I recently bought a 91 ford f150 with a 5.8l efi. has an automatic trans not sure witch one though. The guy had the trans rebuilt now it make a rotating clunking noise from the bell houseing. it has a problem starting also starter spins but wont engage when it does it stays engaged. im thinkin the flexplate was not put on correctly. maybe not torqued down enough but i have know clue. the convertor is tight aganst flexplate i checked that. can some help me?
You may be able to move the starter a bit to have better engagement. You can remove the starter and turn the engine by hand and look thru the starter hole and see the teeth on the flexplate to know what kind of shape they're in.
To get at the flexplate, you'll have to remove the transmission.
The flex plate is bolted on with 6 bolts to the crank, with offset holes, and can only be installed one way. Have you checked to see if the tranny is still bolted tight up against the block? I've seen a few come loose. Also check your starter and make sure the housing on it didn't come loose as well. And, since your down there, should check the 4 nuts on the torque converter, too. If all of that checks out, drop the starter out and make sure the return spring is still in one piece and that the gear slides smoothly.
