Yeah, like an oval track with two straightaways and it can't be but maybe 1/4 inch deep. Would it make any difference if the 429 crank had 460 pistons? DAMNIFIKNOW
but it does have the 4UA crank, so now what? When described the valve relief, I didn't mean that it was a constant depth with a flat bottom. Each end of it has the bottom slightly angled so that it's obvious that it is for valve clearance.

They are probably aftermarket pistons as this style is a what is used in the later model 460's.
Is there a 030 or 03 on the top of them?
Can you read a number on the piston's?

No, there aren't any numbers on the top of them, and I haven't pulled any of them out yet. My main concern at this point is that they're high compression pistons and that I don't have to replace them too. But, is there a way to tell if they're forged or cast pistons? I'm pretty sure that someone has been in this block before. I can see the honing marks on the sides of the cyliner walls, but I can also see the slight vertical marks where the rings are begining to polish the sides so, I guess I'll ge honing it out.

Well, since I was still up at 3 this morning I went ahead and pulled one of the rod caps off. Imagine my surprise when the rod bearing had these #s on it: C8VE-6211-A and under that, FORD B and under that, CLEV.T-77 and under that, 5 72. I'm assuming that these numbers mean these are the factory originals and that nobody has rebuilt this engine before. This is a good thing, yes? They are pretty worn and I'm wondering since the crank itself is still nice and smooth and shiny is there any reason to have it polished or turned? Another concern is that all of the exposed metal on the lower end has turned brown and it doesn't wash off with lacquer thinner. Could this be from heat or maybe because the oil hasn't been changed in years? You had to unbolt a motor mount and jack the engine up about 11/2" to pull the drain plug and I'm sure he didn't do it.DAMNIFIKNOW
