I'm trying to see if anybody can give some ideas on an exhaust for my truck ...... almost impossible to find complete aftermarket exhaust kit for my truck......... considering stacks or straightpipe exhaust .....trying find to adapters and right size elbows if going with stacks...... whatever you guys come up with will take in consideration .... thanks in advance..... 1989 f250 7.3l idi non turbo single cab 5 speed 2 wheel drive
It sounds like your looking to do the same thing im doing. 89 F350 single cab, 5 spd, dually. I just had a strait pipe put on so i can get through inspection and it is really loud and it does not sound that great. I dont know about you but i like the diesel sound. it sounds the same at idle but once you get on the gas it sound like it is a loud gas engine. I have been looking for some after market exhaust kits for mine but it looks like im going to have to make something up.
go to rock auto web site look up exhaust better that that ask mister jeepers creepers where he got all his stuff they even make a set of headers for the old beast
If you have a Truck Pro
anywhere nearby, they carry a great selection of large pipes and fittings. Straight pipes can be pretty rough with no turbo. But you can put straight through big truck mufflers on and still have a good sound without being loud enough to shake the fillings out of your teeth.
I did my whole system in 4" pipe from the downpipe back with a 36" straight through big truck muffler for around $160 ( could have got by a lot cheaper but I used the high dollar pre shaped band clamps on all the fittings)
my buddy has a '90 7.3 idi non-turbo. he ran 2.5" straight pipe off each manifold then elbows up through the bed. in PA we have to have heat shields. he ran the 2.5" pipe up to the top of the bed rails the set 5" from the bed floor over the pipes. also in PA stacks on a diesel truck function as a muffler. that is what the inspection stations tell us atleast. his truck is loud at full throttle and crackels but normal driving it is not that bad.
I made up a 4" exhaust for mine. I used an ATS muffler (huge!) that had two outlets (see my gallery for a few pics). It sounded great at idle but was horribly loud when the RPMs were up. I finally capped off one outlet and ran a single outlet tailpipe exiting in front of the back tire. Still loud on acceleration, but sounds much nicer, but lost that nice, resonant idle. When we get fair weather again and I'm feeling ambitious, I'll put the second tailpipe back on and record it, then record it with the single outlet and post the files somewhere.
well i straight piped the truck today just to see what kind of sound i'd get ..... ppl seem to like it but it kind of sounds like a gasser ....... would bigger pipe make a difference

let me know if it helps MPG's! i want to open up the exhaust and im on a VERY tight budget so if it help MPGS i dont care how loud it is behind me...LOL... it cant be any louder than my old 79 V-8 CJ-7 with headers to flowmasters out the side in front of the rear wheel! that thing was the loudest on the road vehicle ive ever heard when you opened it up ( it sounded awesome at idle)... i had to wear ear plugs when driving becuz when you'd come up on those concrete barriers the sounds was ear busting loud! so if figure with it being all the way behind the rear wheel it wont bother me much...worse comes to worse i can run it out the back to really cut down on what id hear in the cab...N8
