Checking older engine's health?
I bought an old '75 F250 Crew w/460 Engine...It seems to run good, and I've adjusted the timing. Going to give it a tune up this weekend, and replace the carb. How can I check the condition of the lower part of the engine, besides doing compression check? (are there any measures of health other than compression?) Also, what compression numbers would be considered good for an engine? Thanks, Brian

Aside from a compression check, and observing the oil pressure, the only other way to check the health of a motor is to take the pan off and look at the bearings, and do a leakdown test. The rule of thumb for a leakdown test is 10%. As long as all the numbers are within 10% of the highest/lowest cylinder's pressure, you are good to go. The amount of cranking pressure depends on your compression ratio, and style of camshaft used. My 8:1 351M ranged from #95-110, my 10.5:1 460 averaged #150-160.
