4x4 Troubles

2001 Ford Ranger 4.0.

Reading the posts, it seems the most likely problem is the shift motor as nothing happens when I engage the 4 wheel drive. However, I would think the 4x4 light would temporarily turn on when the truck is started and it does not. I do have power to the fuse box inside the cab, but when I shift the lever, there is no click, or light, or anything.

Anybody have any advice? Where I could find the wiring schematics? How is changing the shift motor?

The problem started today after I did some brake work and topped off the differential fluid. I just can't imagine the two are related.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

How many wiring harnesses to check?

The fuses all seem alright, but how many wiring harnesses are there to check. I see the obvious one connecting to the electric shift motor on the transfer case. I pulled this apart and it appears in great shape. Any others?

Today I pulled the electric motor off the transfer case and it works fine. I tested it by connecting the motor directly to the battery. The plastic cover that houses the dial with the electical contacts appears to be one solid piece, thus I was unable to check it. I think it may be time to bring it into a garage as I am tired of looking and thinking about the stupid thing.
