hi, im thinking of getting a f150 in this year range and im a little unfamiliar with these trucks. ive always been a fan of the old ones but im wanting an all purpose vehicle for summer and winter that still gets decent mileage. ive been looking for the 4.6 or 5.4 in a 4wd shortbed. is the power difference major between these engines or does the 4.6 have enough? what about mileage? and tell me about the auto trans, are they tough? also is the tranfer case and 4wd dependable? what are the major problems with these trucks? i just want some general info and opinions. thanx...........

The 5.4 has a little more HP and quite a bit more TQ, than the 4.6. MPG is about the same, so if you need pulling power, 5.4 would be better. The auto tranny is pretty good. Don't have much experience with 4x4, so can't help ya there. Problems range from sparkplugs blowing out to engine fires.....
Just look for a lowwer milage truck with good maintaince, and you should be OK, but you never know with a used vehicle
a little bias, but i love my 5.4L 4x4 SuperCab Lariat! Other than the known usuals, as triton_2002 pointed out, these trucks are largely problem free and mine has yet to leave me stranded in the year ive owned it
yup, same here my 2000 5.4 automatic has always gotten me to and from where i was going , and it hasnt always been an easy path either , but youll be hard pressed to find someone that says bad things about any of the stuff you asked about...seeing as this is the ford trucks forum and we are all on here because we love our trucks, not cuz we hate chebbies
I've had virtually no issues with my F150....love it!
the "fires" were caused by the cruise control wiring, which has a recall and Ford will take care of.....and i had the plugs changed around 95k...never had a problem.
Either the 4.6l or 5.4l should get decent mileage but it depends on so many things lead foot engine runnin perfectly tire sizes pressure etc they get pretty much the same mpg you say your lookin for an all purpose if you haul or tow a lot get the 5.4 the 4.6l wont cut it it can haul and tow but not a lot i think a 4.6l 4x4 supercab short box is a good daily driver unless you want lots of power
yeah i got a 460 in my 78 and god it will pull! but ive heard stories of 4.6s pulling very well for their size and they last along time. are they under powered? are the 00 and up more powerful then 97 98 99?
I dont find the 4.6 that much under powered only on the highway i found the ones i have driven when you nail it hard the engine just revs and takes a while to get going like the speedo goes up slow to pass but what do you expec in a supercrew or supercab 4x4 1/2 ton truck with a smaller motor and bad aerodynamics and I drive a 93 F150 2wd Reg cab long box with a 5.8l so iam used to a powerhouse some say its gutless and underpowered but i dont find em that bad but around town they seem good thats why i say a good daily driving motor for stop and go i have never towed with one so i cant say i think the 00 and up are bit more powerful they changed something in the engine but i forget
hey dustin1690, i think i have epilepsy now from reading your post lol! a period is a good thing everywhere but a woman lol jk! any how I'm not familiar with the 4.6 as i stated earlier as i'm biased towards the 5.4, but i do know i tried to talk the kid that works with me out of a 2wd 4.6 2003 Scab but he didn't listen. He bought it anyway about a year ago now and is very unhappy with it. The biggest trailer he pulls is a little 4X8 trailer with our 2 banshees (4 wheelers about 385lbs ea.) down to little sahara OK (a sand dune state park about 200mi from here).
I have a 97 4.6 auto and have pulled a 20 foot fifth wheel to Alaska, Calgary Canada Southern Cal and a lot more plus hauling a utility with a John Deere and never lacked on power except on grades over 8%. In 160K only a few nickel and dime things DPFE sensor was the most serious. Good luck on the hunt
