Gas gauge doesn't work

Hi,

I'm new to the site, I have been visiting the site for a little bit now it seems to be great. Full of experiance.

I just bought (last weekend) a 79' f150 ranger with a 460 from a friend. The truck has been sitting for a while.

One of the problems is the gas gauge doesn't work. It is a dual tank. It switches from tank to tank ok. My friend had this truck for 12 years or so and it has never worked. The rear tank was replaced last year everything was put in new. I checked the wiring but didn't find any thing cut or bare. What should I do next? There is no manual or wiring diagram of course. I traced the wiring back to the engine compartment, cleaned and greased the connector. there is one wire(larger blue wire) that isn't plugged into anything, but there isnt any thing to plug it in to anyway.

Any help would be great.
Thanks
Paul

If the tank is totally empty it should not be that hard. All it is really? Just an empty shell once empty. I've done them solo in the past using a couple of 2x4's and a floor jack (2x4's on the jack to prevent the tank from getting dented)

I also have a gas gauge problem - hopefully someone here can provide the diagnosis: on my '74 F350 SCS, when I switch to my main tank, the gauge moves to far right, as far as it can (making it appear that the tank is completely full, plus some). However, the tank is empty - I ran out of gas using it as I couldn't tell how much gas was left in it. Sending unit issue?

Sending unit or a wiring issue. I'd start with checking the wiring for breaks and shorts before dropping the tank. The sending unit should 'unplug' and allow for some basic checks to ensure the wiring is ok.

For an F350 with dual tanks, which one is the main tank - fore or aft? I'm thinking aft (rear), but want to confirm it with the experts here - thanks.

Midship is Aux

We have gone over this so many times

It believed by some that when the switch is down it OPENS the Rear/main tank

When it is up it opens the Midship/Aux Tank

I think it may be the way ford assembly people wired it ..Because mine is opposite that on 3 trucks I have.

with my switch in this position. I am using the AUX/Mid-ship tank.
