i have 97 f250HD with 5.8 how much roughly is it to rebuild these engines. are there any intakes chips or whatever can get for it looking to had some hp with out spending thousands of dollars.
Depends on how much you work you can do. If you can put together a short block or addemble the long block it could be a 1500 less! A budget of 3K like hatchet says is a good start.
Find a good machine shop that is not centered on performance. Find a place that does lots of rebuilds and head work for local shops. Those places usually do really good work and are not a bunch of jokers that are trying to rake you to build their own racecars!
Parts you will need (get good stuff like clevite bearings, durabond cam bearigns because they are not way more than cheap junk) Pistons, rings, rod bolts, gasket set, cam bearings, main bearings, brass plug set, oil pan, oil pump (get OE or melling) Cam and lifters (unless you have a roller which I don't know), If you don't have a roller you also need a special break in lube.
Thats probably 1000 all told.
Machine shop will need to do the heads, and machine work on the block. Then if you can't assemble it have them do this. That's probably about 600 to 1000 depending where you live.
If you want a little extra performance look at a hotter cam, but get one that's street legal and works with your stock set-up or you will have other upgrades to pay for too!
