i picked up a 460 but i am not sure the year. i also was wanting to know what the horsepower and torque is the vin # is 6z74a535645 the block number is dive-6015-a2b the valve cover #is d6ae-9c485-hd if so one could help me identify this motor
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 20-Dec-02 AT 00:04 AM (EST)]The Block is a 71. Thats what the D1VE stands for. The tag on the valve covers would signify that the motor is titled as a 76.
I went by the valve cover on mine, it also had a sticker still there that said something about 1976 emissions. I had the 1971 block and 1973 heads. D1VE and D3VE. The number just means when it was last modified, like 1971 series block was last changed in 1971, upped the deck height to 10.322 I believe. The heads were designed in 1973 and so on. The A2A or 'C' or whatever are the revision numbers, you most always want the latter letters, like 'c', because 'c' will work were 'a' once was, but not the other way. The 'V' means lincoln and 'E' is engine engineering dept.
D1VE-6015-?
This means the Block was designed in and built for starting in 1971.
There should be a Date casting code on the block between two marks like this ie: * 6C25 * Have a closer look and see what you find
The letter following the 6015-? is the change-up(design change number as mentioned)if it had been changed twice it would be 6015-C.
Same goes for the Heads,Intake Manifold,Exhaust Manifolds
They have DATE codes cast into them.
This illustration explains it.

Personally,I have never seen a casting number on a Valve cover.
Usually they just say FORD,no numbers, Just stickers.

Mil1ion, you said The letter following the 6015-? is the change-up(design change number as mentioned)if it had been changed twice it would be 6015-C. What does A2A mean if C is the 3rd change-up? Just curious, Thanks.
And I don't know the HP specs for a '76 460, but I bet its been posted here alot.
i checked the block # it is d1ve-6015-a2b and the # that is on the valve cover is on the sticker and the head casting # is d3ve-a2a hope this helps you.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 21-Dec-02 AT 02:58 PM (EST)]As Mil1ion has stated above, you have your typical casting number.
D1etc.
There is another casting date. When you see it, it looks like a plate is screwed to the mold when they cast it on that day. Mil1ion has an example of it. Flathead screw casting, then the date, flathead screw cating. I think this should be right next to the other casting number.
I just picked up my 460 rebuild project last week. Thanks to all of you who posted on this and other threads on casting codes I have come up with this.
Block # - D1VE 6015 A2B, Tells me this block was designed in 1971
Date code - 7F22, Tells me this block was cast on June 22, 1977
Question - It is my understanding that the deck height in the 460 blocks was bumped up starting with the D2VE blocks. D2VE being a '72' year designation, does my block have the lower deck height with the D1VE designation even though it was cast in '77'? I figure it does.
