Dave Ramsey (www.daveramsey.com) says that there are only three things you can do with money:
Spend it,
Save it, or
Give it.
Giving does 2 things; it helps those in need and it makes you feel good. I heard about a guy who gave away $1.3 million as a secret santa. He would walk down the street in a Santa outfit and hand out $100 bills... why? because one time when he was down on his luck, somebody did the same thing for him. His name was Larry Stewart and this is the legacy he left behind:
Im all for giving to charity but make sure the charity you donate to is giving the lions share to the benefactors and not keeping the money to "operate"
Um, that State Trooper fund, uh well, uh, you better take a closer look before you give again.
You are a good man to have given. Nothing can take that away from you, but I'd think twice before given to them again (provided they are is who I think they are).
You didn't give it to a phone solicitor, did you? Those vet, police, firefighter phone solicitors aren't really vets, police officers, or firefighters, nor are they volunteers. They are paid people who often lie through their teeth to get you to give, going so far as to say they are vets, firefighters, etc., sometimes claiming injury, or some other sob story --- with often as little as 10% going to the actual charitable recipient. Ask for their charitable tax id number (tell them you need this to write it off) and then look them up.
Not saying this happened to you, just warning folks.
