what has happened

ok i know there are threads on this but i have a few problems and ned to know fast. first i have a excursion 6.0 with a quadzilla programmed and airraid intake. they have been great but lately...........while driving around 70 and around 2800rpm i wil notice a noise like a fan clutch and a complete blackout of smoke behind me when i hit the throttle and get no power. i ASSumed my wastegate was sticking open, i would stop and turn off motor for a min and recrank and it would go away. now i noticed, on a short drive, my turbo spool was real loud, which is kinda cool but i had no power not as much smoke but slowing quickly. Please help this is my work truck and i gotta roll on wed so i have a few days to fix it so let me know. thanks alot everyone

forgot to mention....no codes, no lights , no warning, no idea

Sounds like the VGT vanes are sticking or the Turbo actuator solenoid is bad. There is no waste gate on the 6.0.
How many miles on the truck and what year?

The 6.0 uses a Variable Geometry Turbo (VGT), the blades move on the turbine side of the turbo to effectively change the size of the turbo. A VGT turbo does not need a waste gate as boost is controlled by the position of the turbine vanes.

Still sounds like VGT vanes are sticking or Turbo acutator solenoid is bad. Without pulling codes and running diagnostics on the turbo, this is just an educated guess.

If you have access to a CAN bus code reader that can access the extended FMC codes you can see what codes are stored. Without codes & diagnostics you are just throwing parts at it. If the turbo vanes are sticking, you can try cleaning them, many times this works. The cleaning procedure is in the 6.0 tech folder.

Oil leak could be from the turbo which can effect operaton of VGT actuator solenoid.

i agree with blackhat, if you're getting lots of smoke and little to no boost sounds like vanes are stuck open, and if you've also got a turbo seal bad that could be your oil issue too.... can you verify exactly where the oil is coming from ??

although the different sounds you are describing are a little baffling, i did not notice any change in sound when i had my vgt solenoid disconnected...

do you have a boost gauge or an egt gauge??

A stuck open egr valve can also cause low power and smoke. I would recommend letting your dealer diagnose it, then you can repair it if you prefer.
