I just finished putting it in my 6637 filter and that big thing went in fine, I did find a problem tho, when looking at the intake tube there were a good amount of scratches on the inside from what looks like stuff getting sucked in.... . I didnt have time to look at the turbo wheel really well but im dreading the worst...
so my question is what would rebuilding the turbo involve?
If enough stuff was sucked inside to scratch the tube, I think you would already know. No need in planning a rebuild until you know you have a problem.
If necessary, rebuilding a turbo is relatively simple IMO. Pulling it for the first time, if you haven't had one off before, may take a couple hours. Be sure to get new o-rings for the pedistal when the turbo goes back on. Find a rebuild kit off eBay for around $100, search powerstroke turbo rebuild kit or similar.
Being a journal bearing turbo, there aren't many parts to it. Compressor housing comes off, exhaust housing comes off, compressor wheel comes off, 4 bolts holding compressor backplate on are removed and it comes off, then you have access to the thrust bearing and washer to be removed. Pop the shaft and exhaust wheel out toward the exhaust side, this may take a bit of a smack with a wood block on the compressor side of the shaft. Once out, you'll see the busings around the shaft that get replaced, along with new ring seals on both sides and a new thrust bearing and washer. First time I tore into my turbo I was nervous, but once I was in there, I found it to be quite simple.
FWIW, my intake has what appear to be scuff marks on the inside too, but no compressor wheel damage from stuff getting sucked in. I think it might be something from the manufacturing process that puts those marks there.
My intake tube looks like a cat was dragged trhough it agaisnt its will lol, and I have noticed a slight power loss so I thinkin that the old filter wasnt doin its job very well...
Don't know if it will make you feel better or not, but I doubt the scratches in you intake has anything to do with trash going through the turbo. It would take something like a cat being sucked in to make scratches like that. How far do the scratches go into the intake? I wonder if the scratches come from a piece of tubing being struck inside the rubber. Maybe a intake mod of some sort.
the scratches couldnt be from a intake mod they go to far up, there are two peices of tube that go from the filter to the turbo, the first one is the one im talkin about and the scratches go almost the whole lenghth of it.
almost like a hose on a leaf vac would look after a few sticks
Oh well, it was just a guess at best. They could have well come from some one using a leaf or shop vac on the inside. Let us know what you find when you get a look at the wheel.
