Brake Controller Mounting

Where have you folks mounted your trailer brake controllers?

I couldn't find a good spot so far, so I rigged up a board that I stuffed in the hole in the dash to the right of the steering column and bolted the controller on to that. The only good thing is that it comes out easily when not in use.

I want to be able to get to it to set the gain control easily and also be able to reach the manual actuating lever if need be. It's an old Tekonsha model.

If you look in my gallery...you should be able to see that I too mounted mine in the cubby. I removed that lower dash (first remove the upper dash) and then mounted it and ran the wires. Looks nice and neat.

I put mine in the recess (small concave area under the cubby bin) on the dash. it`s at the perfect level for reaching in an emergency and is out of the way.

I need to install a brake controller as well and I was thinking about installing it in the same place. How do you get the dash apart to install?

I also have mine mounted below the cubby. That area is recessed just perfect for the tekonsha Prodigy. I need the cubby to keep my wallet in when driving.(Hate sitting on a lump).

Not 100% sure about all years...but I'd bet they are the same.

Remove radio. Remove two screws inside radio cavity.

Pull upper portion of dash out. It's held in with clips, and pops out. Remove all plugs and set aside. Note...it helps to lower shifter to lowest position and cover column and shifter with towel.

The lower dash unbolts with hardware no visible. I drilled a sizeable hole in the top of the cubby to run wiring through..then mounted brake unit.

Same place for me... it seems as though the designers had some foresight when putting the dash together.

I use the "cubby bin" for my wallet... or for putting stuff that falls out of my jacket pockets easily.

Not sure what break controller you have - but my Prodigy fits in that little cubby. I used a Dremmel to make a whole for the plug, ran it thru and up to the OEM conncetor. It's not bolted-in, in any way - just pushed in there. So far it has not come out. This is a good spot for me becuase I didn't use that cubby for much else - it seemed anything I put in there, would side out on acceleration. I thought I had a pic of it, but I cannot find it. I'll have take one and post it up to my gallery.

Yep, I had that problem with my 99F250SD... but that black thingie (got that?)
prevents stuff from falling out on acceleration (when did ford start putting that in the cubbie?) ... Love that V-10 acceleration!!

My wallet doesn't slide out... and not due to thinkness from cash... mostly frequent buyer / rewards cards and pictures... wish it was the $

I didn't mount mine permanently because I didn't want to have it there when I'm not towing the big trailer. I took my Prodigy unit with the mounting bracket installed and just wedged it in the cubby. I can reach all the functions with ease. It stays in there just great and I can remove it without a fuss. The wire I just tuck underneath the dash when not in use.

I just mounted one on my 2000 X, and mounted it in the concave area as others have mentioned. It took a whole 30 minutes. I removed the garbage bag hook and had perfect and easy access to put the nuts on the two mounting bolts. I ran wires up around the bottm of the dash which keeps them out of site. This particular brake controller is the Predator DX.

Tokensha voyager(step below the prodigy)

I just velcro'ed it in the cubby, (but the rubber mat had to come out) The indent in the dash is taken up by my CB radio (big Cobra Nghtwatch with a 102" whip on the back bumper)

So far no issues.
