Two suggestions: Check and or replace your exhaust from the manifold back. I6's need all the help they can get to breathe better. Next, try side-gapping your plugs, but first check, clean or replace your wires, rotor, and distributor cap. These are relatively cheap upgrades to do. Beyond that, the size of your wallet often determines how much upgrading you are willing to do.
Side-gapping is removing a little of the electrode bar that extends over the top of the plug. Try it on an old or cheap set of plugs to see if you like the response. Here's what I did: 1) hold plug upright and mark electrode bar on the side with a pencil, you want to shorten it just enough to have it barely over the tip (anode) of the plug. 2) transfer the pencil mark from the side across the top of the bar. 3) place plug in a vise and use a hack saw to shorten the bar, saw right on your pencil mark. 4) take any burs off the bar with a file and set the gap like you normally would. Now when you look down at the plugs from the top, the electrode bar will just barely extend over the edge of the anode tip, instead of covering it up completely. This lets spark fly more free in the cylinder and gives you better combustion, kind of like indexing but not really. You should notice a difference in engine response, but the downside is the plugs won't last as long. Better response and mpg makes it worthwhile though, in my opinion.
Thanks. That is interesting, but what about those plugs, I think they are called "center fire." I think I have seen them where the electode is exposed in the middle and there are several bars evenly spaced around the sides of the electrode. Wouldn't that be an ideal solution?
