84 F150 with 300 I6, std drive. Every now and then the gauges will start climbing toward the pegs. Gas, oil and temp all go up, amp meter stays put. They will stay there a few minutes and then drop back down to normal. Scared the dickens out of me the first time I saw it happen so I pulled over and checked the engine. Everything was fine. I have checked the ground straps going between the engine and frame and found nothing. The alternator, battery and voltage regulator have all been changed over the years as they went bad and the problem has still shown up. Is this a known problem or just a quirk? Any ideas out there?
Two things come to mind. All of these guages share a common ground wire. From the back of the inst. cluster connection to a location by steering column I think. Also there is a inst. voltage regulator on the rear of the inst. cluster that is common to all three guages. I would have to check manuals to conferm this but I think I'm close.
