Rough Running Problem Keeps Coming Back

My truck ('93 F-150, 302, auto) has a problem that keeps coming back. It idles rough and beats itself to death when accelerating. But if I floor it, it seems to act just fine. New spark plugs & wires got rid of the problem for four months. Then a new distributor cap and rotor did the trick. Six months after that it was taken to a different dealership and new plugs, wires, rotor, distributor cap, along with an EGR & sensor assembly were installed to make the problem go away. Seven months later at still ANOTHER dealership, there are no error codes but one spark plug is replaced. That fix lasted about two months.

I really like this truck and want to drive it until it drops, but this is totally unacceptable. I'm hoping that somebody else has some ideas. I see little point in taking it to another mechanic at this point. Thanks for whatever ideas any of you may have. I need some serious HELP!

Ron

Why are the plugs needing replaced so soon? Are they oil fouled or gas fouled?
No stored codes in the computer?

The single plug that was replaced last time supposedly had a cracked insulator. I don't have any notes on the previous plug changes (and I can't remember).

My job has me traveling the country. I think that it's safe to say that it's not bad gas. Or at least if it is I don't know where to go to get around the problem. My truck gets fed quite the variety the way it is!

I'd be happy to. So far there seems to be a real shortage of ideas though.

Bad computer?
I know some people on FTE had trouble finding their problems, and a suggestion to look at the computer was made.

I've had 2 fail in the last year. But both were 94 models and OBD-II. They both (two different cars) had an injector driver stick wide open so the injector just poured raw fuel into a cylinder. Not good for rings or cat converters. One was a 3.8L 94 Mustang and the one I did this Wednesday was a 94 Cougar with a 4.6L.
I'd doubt that this is your problem because it never goes away when this happens.
Perhaps you might want to check all of the chassis grounds and the ECM grounds at the battery. Bad grounds can reek havoc an a ECM.

Thanks for that tip Jimmy. The next time the truck goes in the shop I'll have that checked out. It's the best advice I've gotten yet.

Problem Solved (Again)

I FINALLY got the truck into the shop. This time it was moisture under the distributor cap and an arcing plug wire. The plug wires are under a year old, but apparently this one was rubbing on something somewhere. A simple fix. Now we'll see how long it STAYS fixed this time. Thanks for the suggestions!

Get some gas line dryer You can't rely on the ethanol in fuel to take care of water since
it picks up water along the supply route from air, delivery truck and station tanks and
since the water laden ethanol is sinking especially when the truck sits it can mimic all
sorts of problems. Triple dose it and run it until 1/8 tank or so and refill with fresh fuel
and then every other oil change add a bottle of heet. Don't forget you are supposed
to put a dab of dielectric on the nose of the rotor inside the distributor to keep moisture
at bay it wouldn't hurt to put some on the distributor cap base and of course plug wires.
