I am ready to buy the Doug Thorley headers tomorrow when they reopen. But have just recently ran across a mini crisis. About a month ago I spoke with someone at Doug Thorley about the long tubes for my 1995 F350 with a 460. I told them I didnt need the y-pipe and if that would take any money off the extremely expensive headers. She got back on the phone and said yep, they would only be $640 without the y pipe. So I was very excited how cheap they were, but intil just this moment when I went onto Summit to go research the Thorley headers, I realized that theres two of them, one is Nickle Chrome, the other is Ceramic Coated, I obviously want the Ceramic Coated ones, but she just assumed I was a cheap *** and wanted there Nickle Chrome junk. So now the headers wouldnt be $640, they would be more like $880, the y pipe only took $100 off, so now it makes sense. She just deducted $100 off the $740 Nickle Chrome version, oppose to the $1000 version, ahhhhh, this makes me angry, now I am spenind big bucks on a set of headers that prob wont even make that dramatic of a difference.
I put the HED-89460 headers on one of my 95 460 service trucks. They worked great , no leaks.I owuld not give 800 for headers that are not that great to begin with.
You get what you pay for with the Thorleys, they have thicker flanges, thicker tubes and a superior design over the heddman or hookers. The tri-y or 4into2into1 design is proven to provide the best power down low as well as throughout the powerband. I agree go with the ceramic coated headers, nickel will rust up quick. In most cases you get what you pay for and this is no excepetion.
That being said any header is an improvment over the stock cast manifolds. If you don't want to spend a lot of money the heddmans will still provide better power than the stock manifolds.
Great news gentlemen. I called Doug Thorley directly to get to the bottom of this. The service man on the phone said that it would be around $800ish without the y pipe so I was like damn, thats alot of money. But he said wait a minute, we have a set of headers that are on special right now, but there for the bigger F400-500's, but will still fit your truck. He said there designed for a true dual to so they would come straight down oppose to the ones for my truck which are designed for a y pipe. So I was extremely pumped up, he also said they had 1/2inch flanges, and extra strength welds with titanium or something like that. But get this guys they were only $600! So not only did I save $200-250, the headers are designed for a true dual, they are thicker, and better quality....And he said there gaskets are 3 layered are I shouldnt have to worry about locker nuts like Summit suggested I do because he said the reasons header bolts become loose is not because there coming undone, but because the gasket compresses, hence the header becomes loose against the bolts. But he said the gasket that come with those headers barely compress, and maybe just once i will need to tighten them. Man I am excited, headers on the 460, about time!

I want to see some pics of those headers when you get em. Thats a good price. Thorley headers are built stout.
Working great so far. I finally got to try em out good with a run up state. Steepest grade I wen't up was 18%. I wasn't pulling anything, but there was noticably more power going up the hills compared to prevoius trips with the stock manifolds. Power in 3rd gear up the hills was the most noticiable, really pulled the hills with hardly any throttle input. Thus far I'm happy with my Thorleys.
I have the K&N FIPK and an SCT SF tuner. I'm going to get my truck dyno tuned in the spring, should add about 5rwhp and 5rwtq on 87 gas. Once my truck is paid for I want to do a gear swap to 4:30s and an E-locker in the rear. (The stock LS rear is junk) I want to put on a tranny cooler or high capacity pan on the tranny. I'm getting a remote start/alarm system installed soon. I also want to replace the head unit and the 4 speakers. As soon as you get something done you come up with more things to do.
Exactly man sounds like a sweet rig. I am sort of running out of things to do with my truck, after the headers I got it narrowed down to the tuner, throttle body, spray in bed liner, and a sweet stereo system with all the bells and whistles, but looks wise and accesorie wise I think I have done everything i could. My truck brings me so much joy
