If you're out of warrenty, your're out of warrenty.
A sensor can fail anytime and may last 100K or only 40K. I am not familiar with that sensor and would question the $600 bill. i.e. get a 2nd opinion. At the very least go to a parts store and price the item and see if you can do it yourself.
Intake Runner Actuator? That is a new one on me. Sounds like something that might be on a multi-stage intake (like SHO Taurus). It doesn't sound like anything I've seen on my truck.
What engine do you have?
How much of that $600 is labor?
Did they give you a written estimate?
Did they tell you what code they read from the OBD?
Did they give you a part# for that muffler bearing... er, I mean Intake Runner Acuator?
Well, I don't know if I found the right muffler bearing for you but digging through my Ford Service Manuals for 2000-2001 I found an "Intake Manifold Runner Control".... not quite the same verbage as what you said but the closest I could come.... The ford manuals on CD use some wierd format so I can't cut and paste the pciture of where it's at. As you look at the engine from the front of the compartement, there is a wiring harness to the left of the air intake unit. Towards the cab and the the left of the wiring harness is where it points to... I'll dig around a little more and see what I can find but seem to be an idiot when it comes to finding things in these CD manuals.
ive had more problems with my 99 than i speak of,, just got a new engine, a rebuilt, 600 bucks at 45k is only acceptable if thats all u had problems with. all trucks have issues. it sucks to dish out the cash, but once fixed u will be rocking.
You must have a 4.2L in your truck. The imrc's(2 of them, one for each bank)are at the very back of the intake manifold. the upper intake has to come off to get to these to replace them. This could be part of the reason for the high cost. I have replaced a few of these and it is not what I would call a "gravy" job. I don't recall what the charge was on the job, but I think I did it under warrenty anyway.
