I obtained an engine of which I was told was a 302 bt I'm not able to find any definites for this.
the engine is an 85 and came out of a Mercury car. The engine did not have an intake, distributor or oil pan upon delivery so I'm trying to identify it based on the crank shaft number which I found to possibly be 2MAE.
I know the valve covers are 6 bolts so I either have a 351W or a 302. Can someone else help.
I took the heads off the engine already and the only number I found were:
Whats so bad about them? Which numbers work? Where can I get information on what they actually are?
I will be rebuilding this engine for a 3/4 ton truck. Nothing spectacular but she will be pulling alot of trailers. I plan on a new cam, roller rocker lifters, push rods etc.
I sure appreciate your assitance with this. Any issues with E6 to E7 swap? This motor has the flat pistons currently but I was going to change the cam and pistons to get some better pulling power. Any thing else I need to know about regarding this motor?
I would go to a junk yard and pull the heads, rockers and pushrods from a donor car/truck...87 and up I think....even 351W had them.....
and when you go to get pistons make sure you get the 85-87 5.0L H.O. pistons they have a taller compression heigth...1.619 the cast ones are 1.605... gives you more compression and a better quench....puts the piston close to 0 deck instead of .015 down the hole at TDC
Do you plan to rebuild the engine or use as-is? Have you acquired a pan, distributor, intake, carb, etc.? Do you plan on using a carb or fuel injection?
I plan to rebuild the engine from the ground up. I am down to removing the crank and camshaft and I can have the block bored, crank serviced and cleaned up really good. I will be putting in an RV cam for some low end umpf, roller rocker lifters, new piston heads. I will use a carb setup and I have not acquired an intake, pan or dist yet. I will probably put an HEI dist in it, 600 Holly Carb, and am currently looking for E7 heads and push rods from a 351W which are very easy to find here.
you would need 5.0 302 push rods that match your cam.. if it's a non roller cam you need the longer flat tappet pushrods but if it's getting a roller cam then you need the shorter push rods... the roller lifter are taller so you need the shorter push rods ... the 351W push rods are too long...

2MA / 2MAD / 2MAE = 302
The engine is from a 1985?
The heads were cast in 1986.
E6SE: E = decade: 1980's / 6 = year: 1986 / S = T-Bird/Cougar / E = Engineering.
Two different 302 heads were used in the mid 1980's and later
1986/91 = With EFI = E7TZ-6049-C
1985/86 = Without EFI = E5AZ-6049-A
1986/91 T-Birds and Cougars with 302's all had EFI.

Hope this makes sense to someone.

2MAE crank is a 50 oz/in balance 302/5.0 crank. E6SE heads with 5L25 & 5M25 are 86 model year castings(although cast in late 85). One was a November head, the other a December head. As per Hemieater's advice, ditch the heads, they're boat anchors, unless you want a bottom end only stump puller. What are the block casting numbers ? These are at the rear of the block, either on the starter side or driver's side. If on the driver's side, it's a roller block. In a rebuild, all you've end up using is the block, crank and rods.
Not to burst anyones bubbles, but if you are building an engine for a truck you would be better off starting with a 5.8/351W. They make a much better truck engine, and they will bolt in place of any 302,

Hi Gilllawn, in order to get the pan, distributor E7 heads etc. it might be easier to find an entire parts motor (and if you're lucky, one with a good short block so you won't have to buy pistons and such).
Getting the parts one by one can be slower and more expensive. Anyway, good luck on your project.
PS: If you do want low end torque maybe the E6SE heads are okay?

They're more than OK, probably ideal for that application on a 302. All that's required is some time spent with a carbide cutter to remove the massive air injection hump in the exhaust port and unshrowd the intake a valves a little.
