Will a 5 speed from a '98 Ranger 2.3 bolt up to an '87 Ranger 2.9? Both vehicles are 2WD. (I would imagine the flywheel is definitely different) Thanks.
no. the 2.3 has its own bell housing bolt pattern. and the 98 bell is not removable being its a m50d. now, the trans from a 4.0L will swap being its the same block (basically) as the 2.9L.
You may look for a bellhousing. There are bad 5st trannies on junkyards. Swap a bellhousing only. These trannies do not differ inside.
Flightwheel of 4.0 is a bit bigger, not sure about pressure plates and disks.
I have 3.0 Aero converted to 5st tranny and 4.0 SOHC ranger. Starters are different too.
The really unique engine is 3.0. No interchangebility with all other engines. To install 5st tranny on it I used bellhousing of auto tranny. Drilled some holes to bold it on tranny.
