I own a 1984 f-150 with 180,000 miles on the 300 I6 engine and 4 speed O.D transmission. The engine is in need of replacement. It still runs great but has blow-by and it severely lacks power. It is difficult to maintain 55 mph even on the slightest of hills.
What would you all recommend as options for rebuilding/replacing the engine? I know I can get a new long block from Parts America for about $800. I don't know about a short block. I am mechanically skilled but am a little intimidated about buying a rebuild kit. Can anyone comment on installing the rebuild kit (ie. difficulty, special tools needed, time it took).
unless you have a lot of time on your hands, i would recommend getting a new or rebuilt motor and installing that. you may need to get your existing block rebored which would be costly. you will also have to have the head rebuilt, unless you can do that. there are a lot of specialty tools involved in that. plus a prof. rebuilt motor will usually last a lot longer. if you want a learning experience and you have another car to run around for parts and tools...have fun.
Thanks for the info Bagman. Is there a company you might recommend for the long block purchase? I don't know much about the quality of the parts america long block but I could pick it up locally. Would it be cheaper to buy a long block or have my existing engine professionally rebuilt?
i checked my local ford dealer and they gave me a price of about 1500.00 dollars for reman. 300 -6 for my 88-150. i think it had pretty good warranty too.
I was in the shoping mood for a reman 300. advanced auto said thier's were reman's but after looking the builders site over...they practically use everything that was in the dead motor.
I ended up swapping it with my brothers 302 bored .040 over which had 13k on it. for about the same cost as a good reman which was going to run me about 1200-1300. that was with a 3 yr 100,000 mile warrentee. the only things reused in the 302 when he got it was the cam and crank...and they were reground.
