I recently bought a 2000 Super Duty with the 7.3, and really like it. 125K miles, and runs like a champ.
However, it has a nasty oil leak that seems to be coming from one of the oil high pressure lines. It originally looked like a rear main seal problem, but I traced it up the the line.
Is there any trick or special tool to replacing it? I cannot tell if the leakage is from the line itself, or from the fitting screwed into the housing below.
Is this a common problem? Better to let the dealer do it? I have most of my hand tools handy, but all the rest are in storage (we are in the process of moving and a new job right now).
Thanks! Any advice or insight is greatly appreciated.
could be an O ring on the end of the line. If the hose itself is leaking you will see oil spraying everywhere. I recently blew a line and it sprayed 2 gal of oil in a hurry.
I too had the oil leak you describe, found it to be the o-ring in the fitting in the head. To remove the line you push the the black rubber washer above the fitting down into the fitting thus expanding an internal ring locking the two pieces together. Pull the line up as push the washer down. Once apart remove the fitting, clean and inspect. Mine had a small nick in the o-ring, remove the o-ring but because there is also a teflon backing ring in there be careful. Replace the o-ring, I bought an o-ring kit(can never have enough o-rings) and re-assemble. Not a problem since the fix, wish I would have figured it out sooner, it would have saved me some anguish and money.
Good Luck and if you have any question you can always PM me.
To get the line off all you may need is a door panel removal tool. I took mine off this way and it was pretty easy some have said try to use a couple screwdrivers. Using the one tool and pull on it it came right off for me. Mine actually blew a hole in the line, lost alot of oil real quick. Let us know what you find.
Wow, thanks for the great information! I expected nothing less of course!
It is definitely leaking from the rear-mounted line on the HPOP (feeding the passenger side head), not the head fitting. With the engine off, the line is loose on the steel fitting screwed into the HPOP, but tightens up some when running. I wiped the fittings clean and dry, but oil wetness appears almost immediately after starting under and around the rear fitting for the passenger side line.
I'll also check the end-plug in the HPOP, but it doesn't appear to be leaking right now.
Two more questions:
1. To remove the line from the HPOP fitting, do I just push down and pull up at the same time? Does it require apecial tool?
2. Is this the correct O-ring kit, and does it have both the end plug as well sa the line O-rings? Part # 2C3Z-9G804-AB
Again, many thanks!

Had the same problem with my 2000 7.3 with 101,000 miles. I made the GMC dealer I was buying it from send it over to Ford to be fixed as part of the deal. Same thing, it looked like the rear main from below but the Ford dealer said it was a high pressure oil fitting leaking. It would drip pretty bad when running. Ended up costing the GMC dealer $189.00 to have it fixed. Seemed like a reasonalbe price to me.
The fitting on the HPOP is the same as the one on the head, no special tool needed, it's built onto the line and there is an o-ring in the fitting. I can't answer the kit # question because I use my o-ring kit. Just push down on the rubber ring towards the fitting and pull out on the line.
