I've had a set of fordged pistons for a 351c fall in my lap for free. I'd like to put them im my 400 that i'm building and i'm trying to find out why i cant ream the .050 out of the pistons to fit the 400 rods i've heard people bushing the rods to do the same thing its just the fact that theres only .025 to the side on the bushing so it seems that reaming the pistons will be the same reliablity as the bushing. some help would be nice. thanks
hi gulfcrestnic, paul kiernan here,
IF i understand you correctly and for what it may be worth to you. i believe you should NOT try that way. why,
1 structural concerns about the piston itself.
2 unless you regroove,at addittional great expense, i believe you will find you have compromised the depth of your spirolocks at your pins, PROVIDED, you are using THIS design. you MAY lose a wristpin if it is not done correctly. i would hate to see that happen to you. if this happens, usually it trashes the block itself. be carefull and we wish you the best ALWAYS.
just my thoughts and op.

one more point paul. i compliment YOU on the adjective you used, (quote ream) versus hone. i have been stone AGAINST honing any bushing esp and alum runs a close second. in my nobody op, these materials should ALWAYS be REAMED. i learned the hard way. again just my thoughts, carry on and always GOOD LUCK i am all done now (grin) pk md
i work in a industral machine shop so the equipment is there they are press fit not floating. theres a lot of meat around the bore i'd just make them a extra .001 or so tighter than normal
I would not "ream" any holes on your pistons. Bushing the 400 rods to accept 351C forged pistons has worked well for me............at least to 6500 rpm shifts anyways.
hi gulfcrestnic, paul, in my defense you did not state whether they wre pressed or floaters. i know the diff. sometimes high quality forged go fast pistons are set up as floaters. i still agree with mudcobra about enlarging the pin holes. it is an unknown. you could try calling the manufacture of those slugs, get there op. hey, try it, run some teflon buttons and let us know, i am always willing to LEARN. whatever you do, the goal is to go fast right(grin). good luck my man, and get back to me if you care. i am interested in whaterever you decide. its always about the MOTOR, later paul k md.
