Performance chips for towing

Would like to hear from other 7.3 diesel owners what performance chip they use. Im have a 1999 F-250 7.3 stock. I tow a 10,000 lb 5th wheel.

I'm looking to increase milage and add a little more torque. Im considering "Edge EZ" but I dont know what to pick, alot out there.

What do you think? Thanks for all your help.

Dave

3 choices. DP-Tuner, DP-Tuner and DP-Tuner. I wouldn't go with anything else.

DP tuner, call Jody, tell him what you're doing and he'll make it run. I tow 15,000 lbs and love my DP. Barney

Or get a Banks. I'll bet the sticker alone is worth 20HP.

I was "given" an edge EZ, and instead of put it on my truck, i gave it to a buddy with a stock truck. But, now he's running DP Tuner too.

I know everyone on this site recommends the DP Tuner. I was going to do that with the Edge Evolution but was too late and Jodi isn't able to work with that unit any more. I went ahead and bought the Edge from Jodi and am very happy with the display, guages and all. Like how it's mounted out of the way, yet very visable. Have had it installed for over a month now but Christmas Eve was the first time I was able to take it out of town. Hooked up the little motorcycle trailer with the GW on it and headed off to Grandmothers house. It's a short 500 mile drive. Takes me 8 hours no matter which route I take. Usually got 11 to 13 MPG before the Edge. Got almost 14 on the first tank but haven't filled again. It was cold and there wasn't the usual head wind so it might not be that.

My question is what level do I use to pull a 14,000 lb Toyhauler? I'm thinking I will start out in 1, run a tank of fuel, watch the EGT, Boost numbers and the Trans temp. If all stays within the ranges of what it did with the small trailer then I will go up a notch and run another tank, watching the same numbers. Don't think I will try the top level with the 5'er hooked up. I will then calculate the MPG and see which I like best (with the drivability factor noted.) I had only pulled the Toyhauler bout 10 miles before putting in the Edge. I hope it feels better, I did tell a difference in the seat of the pants feel with the little trailer. Hopefully my trip will only use a little over 4 tanks of fuel so I should have a good data pool to pull from. Thanks for any advise or other comments.

You can pull in the highest program your EGT's will allow. For sustained temps like towing, i wouldnt like to hold anything over 1300, but if you can do it on 120 race, why not use the extra power, ya know?

That's what my Dad said, but his experience is with Tractors, Semi Tractors and one Chevy Diesel (the one where they modified the Oldsmobile gas engine to burn diesel) was quite a while ago.

So, as long as you monitor all the temps and nothing gets really out of range, all should be OK. The highest EGT empty has been 1000 but only at WOT and it didn't stay there for more than a couple seconds. Did give me a little twist of the gut though when it jumped up there.

Thanks
Rod

I got an Edge Evo in May of this year and I like it. Installation was easy, and it gives you gauges as well as lots of power if you want it. I run stock (0) or 1 (tow) empty and 1 (tow) to pull a 15K 5th wheel. The 2 and 3 settings just have too much power for my needs and the 3 throws a lot of black smoke. The tow (1) setting also stiffens up the Trans shifting which I like a lot.

The down side is you have to reprogram the PCM to change settings which requires the truck be stopped and a couple of minutes. But for me I don't change back and forth that often and it's not a bother.

There are those that will tell you that the factory probes for things like trans temp and boost are not accurate and they might well be right. But the numbers I am getting seem reasonable from what I have seen on this forum and I tend to look for change more than anything else anyway.

There are also those who say Jody at DP is the best PSD tuner there is and if I had it to do over again, I might just have had him program an Edge Evo for me which I heard he is doing now. Or if I had unlimited funds, which I do not, I would probably use his on-the-fly chip and get separate Boost and Trans temp gauges.

But overall, I am so far very happy with the Edge Evo, both with the power, the shifting, the added gauges and of course, the price for all of it combined into one unit.

Thanks for the support. I too feel the same way about the Edge. Maybe some day, when money isn't in the mix I will try the DP route. Of course you could possibly do the DP chip and just use the Edge for the gauges, but I don't know if that would work or not. Will be a while before I call Diane to ask. Anyone else who wants to answer is welcome though.

ps here is the response from DP regarding the programing of the Edge Evo.

Reason I went with the Edge is for the monitoring. Don't like the A pillar gauge sets and don't want to drill a lot of holes in the dash. Having the Pyrometer, Boost, oil temp and another in one spot to view is great. I am very happy with the display. Will be pulling a Toyhauler from the midwest to South Florida after the New Year. My guess is it will be 14000 lbs of very tall, long wind catcher. I wanted to be sure I could monitor my EGT's during the trip. The Edge fills that need with a bit of tuning too. Bought it from Jody so I hope to be first in line when he works out the deal with EDGE.

There will not be a renewed agreement. It's simple, Edge is EPA and CARB compliant with all of their products. As for custom tuning on the Evolutions, it will not be done any longer. We support Edge's decision to not allow anyone to custom tune their products.

Diane

DP pulls my 10,000# trailer very nicely. Helps with the fuel mileage also.

Thanks for your experience! Do you run all the gauges and how many programs on your chip? I'm think of just four.

Check my signature. All the gauges, 4 position switch, cooler.
It would be unwise to run a chip without gauges. Bad things can happen quickly, especially pulling a load.
