NP435 question

Just put in an NP435 and it's almost done. I'm stuck on the shifter cup assembly. It looks like it should compress the spring and hook but I am not getting it to catch. Does anyone have a viable diagram or some advice???

Thanks

just that you have to push down evenly on the cup while turning it. can be a pain in the @#%, but you'll get it.

The two ears of the cap are prolly broken off, because ppl think it unscrews like the one the Warner trans uses.

VERY common for that to happen!
Thanks
B8T-7220-D .. NP435 Shift Lever Retainer Cap - Still available from Ford.

Push down on the cap, then twist it off by 1/4 of a turn.

On the shift tower are two pins that protrude through it to retain the shift lever cap.

Ask FTE member Mil1ion to post the illustration, he's using a CD version of the parts catalog. I can't, because I'm using Ford microfiche slides.

This CD parts catalog is available from hipoparts.com / Also sold on ebay.

Note the word LIGHT - you do not want the Heavy parts catalog.

Is it rotating at all? I want to say I had times when the cap just had to be pushed down deeper.

Pushes down but won't rotate. Plus the clip must be broke because their is only one hook.

If there is only one Clip then definately broke, But I have seen them still work with only one clip. If it won't rotate then 1 of two things.- 1 the clip hook is bent closed and won't allow the side pin to engage. or 2. it's not pushed down far enough.

I can usually use my fingers, but it is hard to do.

I have used Channel locks to push down and rotate the cup. The cup's center hole has 2 flat sides (front& back) and 2 arched sides. I place the opened Channel Locks jaws on top of the flat side (for pushing down) and lightly squeeze close so the teeth on the Channel Locks engage with the arched sides for rotation.

Another thing to consider is "Where did the other clip GO?" Those 435's are pretty tough and would probably chew it up and not cause too many probems. But that is not really advised. With my luck if some thing can go terribly wrong, it will. I'ld pull the top cover and look around for it. Maybe pull the drain plug or side cover to look in the bottom.

Good Luck
Shawn
