Yesterday, after about an hour drive we stopped at a Jack N the box for my wife and kids to use the restroom. I waited in the truck for them. When they returned, I went to start the truck and something strange happened. THe engine cranked and cranked but would not start?!?! After looking under the hood for a few minutes and seeing nothing, I again tried to start the truck. Just kept cranking and cranking but no spark so to speak. After another 5 minutes or so and another underhood exploration, it fired up. I ended up getting to my destination, turning the truck off, and it fired right up when I left. This morning, no problem it fired right up.
Is this a symptom of something serious? I have a 2005 F350 King Ranch Dually 4x4. 40,000 easy miles. Oil changed every 5000 miles, fuel filter changed per the book and tranny serviced. I have neer had a single problem to date with this thing. Any help is greatly appreciated.
Sounds like classic High Pressure Oil Pump (or HPOP) problems. When the engine gets hot, the oil pump develops a leak and can't build enough pressure to fire the injectors. This has been talked about many times in the 6.0L forum. The problem can be with the pump itself, or a fitting on the pump. I believe the 2005 6.0L is one of the models more prone to experience this problem.
