2001 Ford MPGs
I purchased my first Ford (F150 V6 Standard Tranny Super-Cab) in September 2000. I ran synthetic oil trough it since about the first year. As well as I only ran on Chevron Gas. I noticed with both I got in increase of about 1 mile per gallon to about 18.8 mpg.
This last year I bought a Salem Travel Trailer, by First River. The trailer itself weights about 3000 lbs. With the trailer fully loaded The Steer Axel was 2680 lb, the Drive Axel was 2860 and the Trailer Axel was 4260, for a gross weight of 9800 lbs. For this vehicle I was 2000lbs over loaded by (20%).
I than drove this weight from Tucson, Arizona, up to Wisconsin and back. The Truck performed very well with the exception when I stayed at a KOA in South Dakota. I tried to back into a site and the clutch kept spinning and would not allow me to back it in. Come to find out My F150 has a Mazda Transmission so the clutch is real light, thus the lower of the towing capabilities. Up there and back I averaged about 9 mpg.
I just recently traded my 2001 Super-Cab in for a 2001 Super Crew Cab. My “new” truck now has a 5.4 liter V8 Automatic Transmission, and is a 4X4.
I use the Scan-Gauge II to monitor all output from the computer. When I first bought he “new” truck I noticed I got about 15.5 mpg. I just recently bought some new tires for it (Yokahoma Geolander AT/S). With the new tires I noticed a 1.5 decrease in mpg’s. Yesterday I took the truck in for a full service oil change. I had both diff’s , transfer case, Engine, and Transmission fluids changed. It is too soon to see if this made any improvements on the fuel economy. Next year I plan on installing Flowmaster Exhaust system.
Some Questions I have. Does a throttle body spacer really increase fuel economy? As well as if I were to reprogram the computer with a tuner program will that help? Has anyone notice a significant mpg increase with these modifications. Also I plan on using my truck for recreational towing. I am 3000 lbs under the max towing limit for this vehicle. Is it truly necessary that I install a Transmission Temperature Gauge? The truck came standard with Tranny cooler. I plan on taking the Trailer out in Jan I will post how it does on gas than.
One could say if I am so worried about fuel economy, why don’t I buy a hybrid. Because, I want to have my cake and eat it too! Thus, I want 60mpg while pulling a 2 ton trailer.

You have a lot of questions and you will find a lot of answers in our tech forums. Click on the Forums tab at the upper left and scroll over the boards. You can post questions in them or just start reading some of the post that other people have made. The 1997-2003 F150 board is a good one, there is one for programmers and another for towing. I doubt you will see an increase in fuel economy with aTBS and a programmer will give you more power and expense since you need to run premium with most of them. It is not necessary to install a tranny temp gauge but it may give you piece of mind.
