For some reason...my wife says I can pick any set of wheels for my 84..2WD longbed...for my Xmas present..Can't help but think it will cost me down the road...I have a set of new Dayton..30X9.50R15s on it now. Have decided on Chrome OEM style with moon type caps. The backspace is 4 inches on the stock wheel...and I think it is 6 inches wide. Would like to go a bit wider...but want the tires inside the wheelwells for a stock look. Should I order wheels with same backspace and a wider width...or change the backspace in accordance with the wider wheel ???.....Since none are returnable after mounting...I want to be sure...Any help appreciated. Just joined this year..and have been helped a bunch with my truck..Thanks again and Merry Xmas...
However wide you go, you want to keep it balanced, You need to check the clearance to the spring, and make sure you don't get that far. So if you have say 3" of clearance, stay back at least 1". From there, you then divide the additional width you are adding in half, add that to the current backspace. So if you go 2" wider, you would add 1" to your backspace. So if you went 6", that would be 3". I just told you to not go that far in this scenario, so you would add 2" to your backspace, then the rest to the front, so in essence, add up to your max in backspace, and stop. Clear as mud?
Be careful running more backspace. You can run into the tire rubbing the radius arm when making a tight turn, among other things. You are safer running the extra width on the outside.
Fellro 86...So an 8 inch wide wheel would need a wheel with a 5 inch backspace ??...or ..as Franklin 2 says...keep the 4 inch..and add the 2 inches to the width ???????
That would be my thinking, but Franklin does bring up a good point.. To check that, i would crank the wheel as far as it will go in both directions and measure the clearance there as well. Then you can asses whether to add to the backspace, or leave it alone.
The situation I am familiar with is a little different, but maybe it's not. I had 31x10.5 tires on the stock rims, and they rubbed the radius arms in a parking lot when making a tight turn(this was a 1980 4x4, no lift). I then went to those cheap chrome modular wheels, which were 8 inches wide. They put all the extra wheel to the outside, and with the same exact tires, they did not rub the radius arms anymore. Now that I am typing this, it seems like those modulars might have had even less backspace if they got rid of the rubbing. One thing I was worried about was the tire rubbing the back fender when I was hauling a load of wood, but it just missed it with about a 1/2" to spare.
A lot of tire stores carry those cheap modular rims. If they had some in stock in the 5x5 1/2, maybe you could measure them and see what back space they do have.
After calculations..Ordered Wheel Vintiques...15X7...4 inch BS...In OEM Chrome...uses any stock 10 1/8 cap....The price from WV shipped to me was $612...I ordered from Summit....shipped to me....$405...REALLY a case of shopping around..Summit charges a flat $10.50 for shipping...WV was $37 EACH....My truck is 84 Red/Silver...108K miles..Original paint, and Loaded...In the garage for the winter...will try to post some pics. later..Thanks for the help...again...and a Prosperous New Year to ALL....
I just put 31X10.50X15 tires on American Racing 15X8 wheels on a 1983 2WD longbed, they rubthe radius arm when I have the wheel all the way at the lock, but it does't really affect regular driving. They have 3 3/4 inch backspacing and offset was listed as -19.
Bob...Google...wheel vintiques...click on steel wheels...then 64 series...Available in many sizes, offsets, etc. I chose the 15X7 with 4 inch Backspace....With NO NEGATIVE OFFSET...just for the reason that Grandpas 83 rubs on lock to lock. The stock Backspace is 3 3/4..An inch wider and 1/4 in difference in Backspace will not rub..or cause any problems....Let me know if I can help more....
