460, 460, 460, 460!!!! You will be driving with a permagrin if you put a 460 in a 1/2 ton. I have done a couple of them in the past, the last one was in a show truck. It had dual carbs, huge tall tunnel ram, very lopey cam sounded awesome turned alot of heads.
Stroke the 351. Sounds like your wanting a show off truck (not a seriuos trail rig). You will be cruizing this on the street and maybe some mud here and there. The stroker will give you the bottem end torque to get the truck from red light to red light. Very doubtful you will see many 5000 rpm top end runs at 110 mph. Go fuel injected. will give you better fuel milage cruising.
The 351w weighs in around 525 lbs where a FE motor is about 200 lbs heavier.
my 2 cents.
I guess yall missed my previous posts about this build. This rig sees trails and mud (generally mountain trails that lead to mud) every other weekend, with the shortest trailride being just under 10 miles. And if i dont have time to trek into the mountains it sees even more mud on the farm. Its a work truck, DD, play truck. I dont beleive in "show trucks"
And Paul, even if i were to keep the 302 id be swapping for a ZF cause this M5OD aint lastin much longer with all the trail abuse
I did miss ur previous post, sorry. As for Show truck, your right, ain't got no use for 'em. That is why i said "show off truck". In southernese (redneck bable) showin' off means playing, screwin' around, etc....
Does anyone have a hp/tq estimate for a 393 stroker?
I would absolutly love a BB 429/460 but as long as this truck is a DD i dont think i could feed a thirsty FE block...Plus I cant afford a D60, if i could then it would be getting a D60/Sterling 10.25 setup instead of a D44/9" setup.
The 390 is an idea i had overlooked, can often be found for cheap, and are without many of the flaws of the 400m blocks. Just curious, but how would you define "Doing it right" when it comes to a 390?
EDIT: PS whats the power ratings on a stock 390?

Depends on a few things, like year, 2/4/6 barrel, Compression ratios ranged from 8.5 up to 11.0 and anywere in between. Not sure on the accuracy of these numbers but the lowest rating ive seen for stock is 201HP and 376 torque (72-75 truck) and the top I think is 401HP and 430 torque (61-62, 10.6:1, 6 pack 6000rpm). And along with the compression ratios anywhere in between these numbers for HP and torque through the years.
There is nothing inherently wrong with a 400. In the 07 Jegs Engine Masters Challenge there were no less than 3 built, out of a field of 28. One the 3rd place motor by John Kasse. Also of note 2 de-stroked FEs, one a 331 the other a 352. See the Feb 08 (Current) Popular Hot Rodding. Very informative read. These engines in the contest are not that exotic, just well built.
The 390 would be a good choice i would say, but i would go 460 if your looking for a BB. I love the 390 but the 460 has EFI choice in it. I voted for the 393. This is from what i read in a magazine, is that you can build up a SB for less money than a BB and can get as much power out of SB as BB. The main thing your going to be missin from a BB is the low end power, when your muddin the rpms are high and thats where a 393 would be good at i would say.
I myself am leaning towards a 393 build. I like EFI for a DD because after sitting outside in the cold all night it takes alot of pumping to fire up a carb. Plus i wont need to worry about beefing up the front end springs to support a BB and i know that the 351 and the ZF tranny fit nice n easy in my truck. Not to say im against fabbing stuff when needed, its just one less complication though.
Though it is alittle hard to swallow $1000 for the stroker kit + the cost of the 351 (150-400) when for like 500 i can get a running 390...but i s'pose once you add the 4 speed tranny, the time and parts to rebuild the 390 and the time to custom fit the engine and tranny it would all even out...
my original vote was for a stock 351 because i didnt know if you truck was MAF or SD !You must have MAF if you are talking about the stroker !I guess i am still partial to the 351 for good power and longevity my current one has 307,000 miles and still going strong if you go for the 351 look for one that has the factory oil cooler that bolts behind the filter be sure to get the hoses that go along with it both 351's i have had came with this option and both were high mileage trucks with no engine problems
