The bottom should also unscrew seperate from the old filter seperately. Screw that on the new filter first then fill the filter with Diesel Kleen or similiar diesel additive. Finally screw on the new assembly. The filling of the filter insures quick start and less chance of the system getting air bound.

What do you do when the system gets air? We changed my sons filter and I forgot to fill it, the truck started for a couple seconds and dies, now it won't start.
first off, take the filter off and fill it up, and put it back on. then crack loose one of the injector lines to help bleed the air out of the pump. don't crank it over too long, maybe 20-30 seconds, then wait 2 minutes to let the starter cool down. once you get it started, tighten the injector line back up..
if you keep cranking it over till it starts, you will burn the starter up.
I just replaced my starter with one of his from ebay and I'm very happy with it. No core charge and great price. I also replaced the positive cable with the ones here: http://custombatterycables.com/parts/just_parts.htm .
Wow it cranks fast and starts on the coldest days quickly (and I don't plug in).
